Priority queues at theme parks!

Bridget1983 · 23/07/2019 16:20

Who does this?! Cause I’m looking and thinking I would be mortified to be the person pushing in front of a 6 year old who has just queued an hour and a half for a ride!!

OP posts:
MadameMinette · 24/07/2019 18:41

It's the wealth gap in this country that should be the subject of your ire, not the queue jumpers or the theme parks - they're just a product of a much deeper problem.

Devora13 · 24/07/2019 18:46

Mostly people like us who have autistic children who would not be able to enjoy a day out if they were expected to stand in a queue for anything more than a few minutes.

But, as someone else said further up, Disneyland and DisneyWorld fast passes are free. So it's perfectly possible for everyone to get a fast pass ticket if your at Disney - no extra costs.

If you get into a Disney park and know a particular ride is really popular, you just choose a ticket (or book a slot on line before you go in depending on the system used). So you may get a ticket that's timed between 11am and 11.30am. You're there at 9am. So you've now got 2 hours where you can do the less popular rides, use the loo, get a drink, whatever. Then you roll up at the allotted time and you zip to the front on a second queue along with everyone else with a similar timed ticket.

Once you've done your ride you can choose another one to get a ticketed time for.

It works well because different families like different rides so they can choose which rides to get a priority on and which they're happy to do at less busy times.

And, as I say, it costs nothing on top of the package you get. That's the way the industry should be doing it.

And it does make Disney money. Let's say your allocated time is 11am. It's 10.30am and you've done your less popular rides. The queues are a little too long at the other rides so you don't want to risk losing your allocated spot - what do you do? You go and buy a drink or browse in the stores or get an ice cream. It's almost a deliberate 'down time' to make sure you do all the other money making things in the parks.

If Disney can do it I have no idea why Legoland and the others can't do the same.

Not cool. I think it's so unfair and puts kids and families in two different categories. The haves and have-nots. Disgusting in my opinion.

Adreamaday · 24/07/2019 19:43

At Disneyland the ride attendant allowed us to skip a 90 minute queue. They saw my excited DC ( ride based on their favourite movie) outside the ride and told them they were on the next ride and took us to the exit to get on the ride. They didn't let anyone get on the ride until my dc had chose which seats they wanted. They called my DC VIPs and they loved it. No we did not feel embarrassed.

TacoLover · 24/07/2019 19:47

Comments such as it’s irresponsible to wait in a queue with a six year old for 90 minutes.

Posters only said this because the OP said herself that she could afford the fast passes, but didn't. It would be irresponsible imo to make your child stand in over 30 degree heat for 90 minutes(which can make them sick in some cases) when you could choose to pay a price you can afford.

thesockgap · 24/07/2019 20:00

"No, we have to wait for an hour as we've got less money than them."
See I really dislike this attitude.
As I said in my previous post, we're far from well off. Very far from it. I seriously doubt that everyone in the standard queue had less money than we do!!!! They had just, for whatever reason, chosen not to spend X amount on fast passes. We chose to save up for a few months and treat ourselves to fast passes to make the most of our day. I'd have been furious if I'd overhead passive aggressive comments about our supposed wealth, and the commenter's supposed poverty!!

TheCherries · 24/07/2019 20:00

Oh please. It is unfair that another child has an iPhone before my kid does. It is unfair someone sits in first class when I have to stand in the aisle in second class, it is unfair, it is unfair .........

People cut their cloth accordingly. Having grown up living on the breadline we didn’t sit and grumble how unfair it was others had more than us. We got three paper rounds and enabled us to buy the food we ate, I got a job as soon as I legally was able to bring money into the household while I was still at school. I worked my socks off and studied hard and went without a huge amount to save hard. I set myself a budget of £5 a week spending money to squirrel away every penny I could earn to afford a degree course while I was working. Had a brick of a phone, a second hand/hand me down tv, a flea market sofa.
I now have some money, enough to treat my family so sod it we will have some fast track tickets and have a blast of a day and I will not feel guilty in doing so.
As I child I went on a school trip and stood in the queues at Legoland and I would wonder what it would take to get one of the beat the queue tickets.
It spurred me on. Let it be the spur to squirrel away some money to be the treat your little one desires.
Whatever your aspiration work out how to get it through legal moral ways. Don’t let envy leave you bitter.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 24/07/2019 20:06

As other people have said Fast Passes are included with Disney tickets. If people can't be arsed to use them it's their own fault.

MoodLighting · 24/07/2019 20:10

I think it's lame and I'm bored with a culture that thinks money is all. Plenty of people do socially crucial jobs that don't pay well. I doubt Boris will do much about rising inequality though.

Yodude · 24/07/2019 20:19

I don't like them. Makes buying a normal ticket a waste of time. If nobody had priority passes then there would be a point to joining a queue. Everybody could just take their turn. But there is no point in queuing because people can just come along and take your turn. If everyone bought a priority pass we'd all still have to queue or they would have to start selling Special Special priority tickets. Those buying them rely on those who don't to gain any benefit.

Queuing with young kids generally sucks anyway which is one of the reasons why I don't like theme parks.

FelicisNox · 24/07/2019 20:26

YABVU.

Just because you either do not want to pay extra for priority passes or cannot afford them does not put others in the wrong: you're jealous so instead of pretending it's rude to push in a queue in front of a child, let's call a spade a spade shall we?

What's mortifying is your "if I can't have it, no one else should either" attitude and my advice would be DON'T PASS IT ON TO YOUR 6YR OLD.

It's like saying "yes, I know you bought a bigger house/car/holiday than me but you can't have because I can't have it".

That's not how life works dearie. Stop being bitter, buy the passes next time.

Oblomov19 · 24/07/2019 20:41

I'm confused. What are you objecting to OP?

If people pay they get faster access.

Of people have SN and her registered they get faster access.

And? Hmm

Aragog · 24/07/2019 20:49

Makes buying a normal ticket a waste of time

No. Buying a normal ticket allows you access to the theme park and to ride whatever you chose. With good planning you can still ride a lot of rides time. Its a darn site better than not being able to afford a ticket at all too!

If everyone bought a priority pass

Not everyone can. They are restricted in number. They can only sell a certain number per day. For those with time limits attached (such as the ones we have for Universal in Japan) there are only a certain number allowed per time slot. Likewise with the free Disney fast passes, which are available to all.

If nobody had them the queues wouldn't be shorter. All the people with priority would be in the standard queue - the queues would therefore be longer overall.

Those buying them rely on those who don't to gain any benefit

Obviously. Hmm There'd be no point if everyone had them after all.

But there is no point in queuing because people can just come along and take your turn

The queue times listed already take into account the number of express passes sold. So your queue time is unlikely to change because of them - not everyone with a priority pass will show up at the exact same time to use them. It may go up due to other factors such as a ride break down or an approaching thunder storm but not for priority.

You see the time before entering the queue and make your choice whether to join it or not. No one is coming to 'take your turn.'

A priority pass doesn't give you direct access to the ride. There is often a queue, just shorter. The people operating them allow a set number of people from each queue onto the ride. On some of the bigger rides with more than one track there are separate cars/tracks for standard and priority queues.

Devora13 · 24/07/2019 21:00

Strawberrypancakes yes totally, but for us (maybe you too) because it's autism not an obvious physical disability, we still get the judgement from the "But he looks so normal" brigade.

It would make the main queue bigger, but the waiting time for the main queue is definitely made longer by having the fast pass queue. When you're in the main queue, people are always joining the fast pass queue, and they do get priority, which slows the main queue line down.

I've been to several theme parks, several times over, and the ones that have fast passes, the main queue times are much bigger, than a theme park that doesn't have them.

Not everyone can. They are restricted in number.

I think that's what they say, but I've seen the main theme parks still selling fast passes way into the late afternoon, and the queue times just getting bigger. If they are restricted, I'm guessing the amount is set pretty high.

The prices are very high for priority passes, up at Alton Towers they are £6 per ride per person (roughly) so for a family a 4, £24 per ride Shock

I've exceeded my daily salt allowance just by reading some of these posts.

WaitrosePigeon · 24/07/2019 22:38

I always pay for speedy queuing. Sorry.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 24/07/2019 22:44

Bridget1983 I'm totally with you! It's the same 'I'm alright Jack' attitude that people use for private education and health. I really fucking hate 1st class on planes, trains etc as well. Like you, I can comfortably afford these things but really can't stand the money grabbing attitudes of the companies concerned.

Inmyvestandpants · 24/07/2019 23:18

Not cool. I think it's so unfair and puts kids and families in two different categories. The haves and have-nots. Disgusting in my opinion.

It doesn't put them in those categories at all. They are in those categories. There are also some who cannot afford to go to theme parks at all. Should all day trips be banned so that those who can't do them don't feel jealous?

I heard recently that at Disneyland there are disabled people who make a living being your cared-for person for the day. You get to jump all the queues as a "carer and SN person", and they get cash, and all the rollercoasters they can stomach every day. Playing the system.

saavi · 24/07/2019 23:36

I'm shocked people have an issue with this. Life is unfair, move on.

minipie · 24/07/2019 23:47

This is like the private school debate only a million times pettier.

Laughed at “the haves and have nots” though. Erm, I think the have nots are the kids who have never and will never be taken to a theme park. Not the ones who go but have to queue longer.
