Moving house

So we finally move on Thursday. We have booked a mover having never moved from bought to bought before. But I don't know what to expect! My husband says I am daft for stressing about it and that they will come in, do all the work while we sit around watching tv drinking tea etc and not have to help at all. I think he is dreaming to be honest.
So aibu thinking that he is dreaming or does it work like he thinks?

He is right. We went out and they called when they were nearly done so we could clean.

HennyPennyHorror · 23/07/2019 14:23

Well they won't pack your clothing or personal items OP. Have you done that? Packed away ornaments etc? Books and so forth? They move furniture basically. You have to pay specialists to pack everything.

ChicCroissant · 23/07/2019 14:25

You have to pay extra for packing OP, have you done that? If not, get everything into boxes and they will load the boxes and the furniture on the van. Have they been round to give you a quote?

Finfintytint · 23/07/2019 14:28

What service have you booked? Full packing they'll do everything excepts pets and gas canisters.

HillRunner · 23/07/2019 14:28

What they do will depend one whether you have booked a full pack (they do everything), partial pack, or just moving (you pack, they put the boxes in the van). But if you've booked a full pack they will do everything.

Lazypuppy · 23/07/2019 14:28

Pretty sure you have to pack everything into boxes, they move it

pancaketits · 23/07/2019 14:28

From experience, movers clear one room at a time, you pop round with the hoover and clear anything hidden behind or under the furniture once the room is empty. They will probably want details about what's to go in which room furniture-wise.

It took 2.5 hours to get our three bed semi's contents on to the van.

Other than cleaning, there is very little for you to do. Expect to feel a little emotional when you stand in your empty house for the last time! Good luck.

Seeingadistance · 23/07/2019 14:29

It depends what you've booked and paid for.

If you've paid the extra for them to pack everything up, load the van, unload and unpack, yes, you do little other than try to keep out their way.

If you've just booked them to load and unload, then you have to provide boxes (unless they've agreed to do that), pack and label everything yourself all ready for them to pick up and put on the van.

ineedteanownotlater · 23/07/2019 14:36

Sorry, should of said. We have booked for just the on the day move.
Packing wise I am very nearly done just a couple of last minute bits to do tomorrow now.

DappledThings · 23/07/2019 14:38

You should have paid for the packing! Then then do absolutely everything and it's quite a sight.

Even if you haven't and you've packed everything then yes, they will remove everything from the house without your help and almost certainly prefer you not to be in the way.

ChicCroissant · 23/07/2019 14:40

Ah, sounds like you are almost all sorted then. Keep some tea and biscuits handy for them!

Good luck in your new home, OP! Flowers

HeadsDownThumbsUpEveryone · 23/07/2019 14:45

they will come in, do all the work while we sit around watching tv drinking tea etc and not have to help at all. I think he is dreaming to be honest.

If you have packed everything why do you think you would need to help them move things, that's what you are paying them for. Your DH is right except for the watching TV part as that will have to be packed too. Grin

The only thing you will need to do is to whizz the hoover round and tell them where you want the boxes when you get to the new house.

ineedteanownotlater · 23/07/2019 14:47

@DappledThings we did want to book the packing as well but it has been such a pain getting a firm date that when we did all the companies we had got quotes off were fully booked!

OP posts:
DappledThings · 23/07/2019 14:51

Fair enough. You can still relax once the packing is done. Your DH is right!

Seeingadistance · 23/07/2019 15:01

Does your husband not realise that the furniture, tv, kettle, cups and teabags will all be packed and leaving the house?

Blobby10 · 23/07/2019 15:20

My tips as despite being organised to the back teeth, each time I have moved (and only ever moved out one day, put stuff into storage then moved into new house a few weeks later) I have found it extremely stressful as everything is done to such a tight timescale.

If you can, move some of the boxes/light furniture so that you leave a couple of rooms nearly empty. Then clean these rooms - then, on the day as they empty each room, follow behind them and clean it. do windows and paintwork over the next couple of days so you just have hoovering and dusting to finish off

Dismantle any beds and sleep on the floor on the mattresses for a couple of nights to save stress and swearing on the day. Same with any wardrobes or other furniture to be dismantled.

Clean bathrooms, shower rooms etc the night before. Remember to clean the loo the removals people use before you leave the house.

Check your sales contract to see when you have to be out of your house - some are 12 noon, some are 1pm, some are 11am!

Delegate making cups of tea for the removals people to your DH or other helper or get him to clean whilst you do the tea! Or enlist the help of a willing parent/friend/guardian angel to help the cleaning

Check how you have to hand over your keys and collect the ones to your new house - this can save untold hours of sitting in traffic jams making stressed phone calls to estate agents and solicitors!

Have an open box ready for people to chuck those last minute "oh I forgot to pack those" items into. If you don't do it the removals people will Grin. You will NEVER pack everything before they get there!!! you WILL still be packing those last minute bits as they drive up!

Keep you kettle, coffee, teabags, milk, gin, wine and mugs handy so you can make a cuppa as soon as you get to your new house. Keep bedding in an easy to reach box, clearly labelled and make the kids beds up .

Cant think of anything else -

ineedteanownotlater · 23/07/2019 15:56

See I knew it wouldn't be all sat around doing nothing! We will be going around after them cleaning!
Keys and things I have already checked and the buyers are meeting us here at 12 with their builder as they are knocking some walls through before they move in.

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 23/07/2019 19:32

I've moved 14 times.

We have 2 clear boxes... Or wtf boxesGrin... We put all the essentials we didn't want to lose...

Keys/passports/safe type stuff/jewellery./photos ..we jept this with us and transported it with us

In the other... Tea/gin/chargers/coffee.

Clarinet1 · 23/07/2019 19:47

I second Devil's suggestion above for anything valuable/important e.g. medicines, valuable items etc. such as laptops/tablets.

RockyRolly · 23/07/2019 19:49

Ours moved room by room after taking the bigger heavy stuff so we just went round room by room cleaning after them. Took about 3 hours. Easy. Dont understand why people do it themselves.

Almostfifty · 23/07/2019 19:50

Keep the kettle, teabags etc to put in your car. The movers will need drinks. I used to bake a big traybake to keep them happy.

ineedteanownotlater · 23/07/2019 22:18

@Almostfifty biscuits from the shop I can do. Baking a tray bake is pushing my baking skills!
