AIBU to want my flooring fixed/money back?

For some reason unbeknownst to even myself, I went with a pay weekly flooring company to lay vinyl in my kitchen and entrance hall. Really, I don't intend to live here long enough to justify tiling or laminate for the flooring and I couldn't face handing over so much money at once, really.

Anyway, the work imo is horrendous. It's not stuck down in places, the edges aren't sealed so water has inevitably gotten underneath it despite my best efforts and it's cut and torn in many places. I shall attach a picture (if it uploads) of an example of one such rip.

The company are being off about sorting this out and have said they don't seal the edges of vinyl flooring, which they could have told me two weeks ago when I first complained. I've not heard anything back from them and I'm still paying for this flooring! In total, it will be £500 including the dodgy fitting work.

Everyone (gently) comments on how shabby it looks and asks how long I've had it down and are shocked when I say only 3 weeks! There's air bubbles and it's not even stuck down in places. I just wanted my home to look nice as it was that horrible sparkly safety flooring and I have put up with that with having lived here for 2 years and I was so excited to have a nicer floor.
Don't have a lot of money as a student so can't just write this one off and chalk it up as a lesson learned.

AIBU to either want this rectified or my money back so I can take it up and get a decent floor fitter in? I've never complained about anything I've bought or a service I've recieved in my whole life so not sure if I'm just overreacting but £500 is a hell of a lot to anyone not just me I'm sure.

That's ridiculous. Money back for sure

MagicKingdomDizzy · 23/07/2019 11:44

I would absolutely not be paying any more for that. Stop your weekly payments until they sort it out!

LIZS · 23/07/2019 11:51

That's rubbish, did they not even remove plinths.

Lustar · 23/07/2019 12:05

Not good enough! Definitely ask for remedial work or refund. Be careful stopping payments it might affect your credit rating...I'm not sure.

LIZS · 23/07/2019 12:07

The credit agreement will probably be with a third party.

AmIAWeed · 23/07/2019 12:30

If the credit is with a third party they are equally liable. I had an issue with a product and the company wouldn't honour the warranty. I was still repaying the finance on it and Barclays were fantastic in making them fix the issue - in their words they didn't want to supply finance to a company that didn't look after their customers and they certainly didn't want to pay the bill! There's a proper name for it and I'm kicking myself as I can't find it

pancakesunday · 23/07/2019 12:36

That's awful. I have my own flooring business and I know that these pay weekly companies use sub-contracted fitters who are basically paid per job not per day so they would be trying to fit it as quickly as possible. It's not unusual for companies not to seal vinyl unless the customer asks for it but that's been hacked at.

Real the Sale of Goods and Services Act. Then throw it at them!!

MatildaTheCat · 23/07/2019 12:42

Make contact and ask for it to be rectified. Be clear and persistent in what you want.

If they won’t respond or take any action speak to CAB on the best way to proceed.

TheBossOfMe · 23/07/2019 12:44

Small claims?

Leenoss · 23/07/2019 19:16

Hi I'm a floor fitter, which pay weekly company is it and what area?
Only the better companies (I work for jarrolds) tend to seal there work or independent fitters.
Happy to help if I can
