Shut that damn bird up!

(moved this post from rural for traffic)

Our neighbours acquired a cockerel about 6 months ago. Initially his lack of time keeping was amusing - crowing at all times, night & day. Now that it is summer it has become a grating annoyance - primarily as we can't sleep with the bedroom windows open due to him waking us up.

The neighbours are lovely people and whilst we all tend to keep to ourselves I really don't want to cause friction by complaining about the noise. Would it be unreasonable to ask if they could move the chickens further away from us (to the rear of their property) which may lessen the noise for us? Saying that, it's probably why he's away from their house in the first place!

I know the countryside is anything but quiet but this is starting to make me unhappy - ridiculous I know!

What would you do? Suppose it's no different to a dog barking all night?

we had this in our neighbourhood. All neighbours signed a petition to the council and the bird was relocated to a farm.

They need to shut him in overnight and make the coop as dark as possible. And lower the height of the coop so he can't throw his head back to crow.

You can report to the council, most councils discourage residents from owning cockerels as they aren't needed to produce eggs and just cause a noise nuisance.

We had a cockerel until he passed away of old age and to stop him crowing early hrs of morning we did excatly what Nesssie has said .We lower the area of the coop where he slept at night so that he had enough room to move but couldn't throw his head back to crow .Neighbour's were all fine , we are small rural village as i didn't let out until least 8am week days and slighter later at weekends .Used to give the neighbours eggs from our chickens too as we always had too many .Miss my hens , think i need get some more Grin.My neighbour's were happy but that's in no way mean you should have to put up with it .Yes it is countryside noise but it is a nuisance noise if it is affecting people and their sleep etc so yes i would ask them to do something about it if they fail too then council is your next step .If mind had upset people i would have tried to rectify it or last resort i would have rehomed him .We were actually his 3rd home he had to be moved twice because he had been kept in built up areas. We had him from a rescue charity .Miss that little devil he was lovely.
