Swarm of ants on house wall!

I stepped into the back garden this morning to find a swarm of ants all over the back wall of my house underneath the kitchen window. There were hundreds of them on the patio as well, and lots of flying ants taking off - bleugh!

I poured a kettle of boiling water over the wall which has helped, but there's still hundreds, if not thousands of them out there. I do have some ant killer powder but am wary of using it around my cat - although it does say on the bottle that pets need not be excluded from treated areas.

Would you accept that or are you dubious? It's obviously quite toxic stuff to do what it does, so I'm slightly concerned about using it in an area that my cat frequents!

Sorry, I know this isn't an AIBU but posting here to hopefully get a quick response...

I wouldn't use any kind of powder like that around cats purely because even if its not poisonous cats can still be so sensitive to toxins. One of ours rolled himself in spilled perfume oil not long ago and was so unwell for days afterwards. I think he'd tried to wash it off his paws and fur and it upset his innards.

We had all the flying ants yesterday in the garden. 24 hours later they're pretty much gone. I'd leave them be, awful as they are.

Cinnamon!

Sounds odd but the ants hate it

We had this yesterday. Just leave them, ours had mostly gone by late afternoon.
Plus birds eat the flying ants so better to let nature just do its thing!

secretsciurusvulgaris · 23/07/2019 09:26

They are most likely hatching from your wall. They will leave - we had them yesterday and they were gone within a couple of hours. If they are leaving please don’t kill them.

TeaStory · 23/07/2019 09:31

Why kill them?! Or introduce poisons?! That’s awful! Just leave them and they’ll be gone by the end of the day!

PookieDo · 23/07/2019 09:32

They only live a day or so flying ants don’t panic they will leave. Keep your windows closed so you don’t end up with them all indoors!

My dad used to use the hosepipe twice a day for a few days-they always moved-normally to the other side of the cucumber house!
I thought they where good for gardens but he always did it

We had this yesterday too!
I also emptied a plant pot and found a massive ants nest with eggs and flying ants.
We did the same, boiling water and seems to have done the trick. My garden seems to be an ants paradise and we have a few ant hills.
I don’t like the idea of boiling water but also don’t want swarms of the bloody things either.

Maybe because it’s going to be 32C out there today and I want to open my back window/door without hundreds of ants getting in? Hmm

I don’t particularly want ants nesting in the walls of my house either!

Most of the flying ones seem to have disappeared now, but there are still loads of non-flying ones all over the wall/patio.

I'm shocked you would kill them.
