To jump straight on the toilet, NO potty?

DS has surprised me by showing an active interest in the loo over the last few days.

It's surprising because he's very 'baby' like despite walking at 8 months. Vocally, he says no other words than 'no' and 'dog'. The no is consistent, the dog word has to be prompted out of him.

I'm wondering if he's still really not ready which is fine, but I've been wondering if it's okay to just put him on a toilet (with a child's seat), and skip the potty stage?

I explained this to SIL who has him a few days a week whilst I'm working and she disagrees, saying not to do that.

We don't have a downstairs loo so I'm supposing it may be harder.

However, the thought of a potty doesn't appeal to me at all and I remember being told I put straight on a toilet... And I was dry by 22 months.

I did this with DC3 and it was fine, she potty trained the quickest out of the three. I bought a toilet seat with a smaller trainer seat that folded over the top from Amazon like this one:

I used a potty because I was training 2 children and we only have one toilet in the house.
Unfortunately most toddlers can not wait if someone else is having a 10 minute poo!

Dont see the problem with going straight to the toilet, earlier the better in my opinion. Skip the potty out.

Once he is ready to stand and wee you can get targets to put in the loo for them to aim at. Or put a ping pong ball in the bowl

I think it'll be a very long while until he can stand to use it...

Yes 20 months but only just coming out of 6-9 months clothes and into 9-12....

DS is average height for his age and only started standing at just turned 3. He might have stood earlier using the tiny nursery toilets I'm not sure.
I know a few people that went straight into the toilet but they all lived in flats so less distance!

No harm in trying now at 20m OP, make the most of the nice weather (where I'm from everyone traditionally has a go at potty training in the summer nearest the DCs second birthday, almost all of the girls manage it and about half the boys)

I never used a potty. Just waited until they were about 3, and told them how to use the toilet. My DH showed my son what to do, I showed DD. They were both toilet trained in about 3 days.

Postmissposte · 23/07/2019 12:39

All of ours went straight to sitting on the loo. Made sense to me as they had seen us do it, but we never sit on a potty.

i did this at 2 and half with my now 9 y old

from birth he was a massive baby(tall and weight)and he was too big for a potty so i did him straight on a toilet

we used cloth nappies anyway so not as simple as pull ups these days

Cheerfullygo4 · 23/07/2019 18:03

All four of mine straight on to a toilet. Couldn't stomach potty in the house. Good luck!

DS never used the potty once. Straight to the toilet, no training seat or anything. He was 2.10 though and really tall.

I wanted to do the same with DD (now 21 months) as I hate potties. but she showed an interest much younger - 19 months was our first attempt, but she wasn’t ready, so I’ve shelved it for a few months. She’s so much smaller though that the toilet is difficult for her, even with a step and a seat. So she’s been using the potty much more. Currently I just have it out and encourage her to use it around bath time and let her if she asks, but she’s still in nappies and we aren’t actively training right now.

4 DC and never bought a potty, straight to toilet with toddler seat, all dry by 2 1/2.
