To think this Dentist was a bit of a weirdo

Went to the dentist today, he’s new.

Filled out the medical form (why do you have do to it every time?).

Answered the “have you ever been hospitalised” question “yes a tumour on my spine” (also can’t give blood due to transfusion etc).

Dentist asks, how long ago was your tumour? 28 years I say. So how is it monitored he asks. It isn’t, I say. So they just monitor it then? He asks, No, I say, they removed it 28 years ago?!

WTAF. Surely he should realise this and why on earth does my dentist need to know this? Confused

I wouldn’t expect a dentist to know anything about tumours.

Iamnotagoddess · 22/07/2019 22:16

I can’t understand why he asked though.

And why do they need to know this 😂

Normally you just fill the bloody thing out, you don’t get quizzed.

Better that he asks than guesses I suppose. He doesn't know anything about you or, presumably, spine tumours.

Veryouting123 · 22/07/2019 22:18

Maybe because some tumours cannot always be fully removed and are therefore monitored.

Strange though... he was probably just being nosy and making chat!

username678889 · 22/07/2019 22:18

Maybe he was curious about your tumour or making conversation.

Teachermaths · 22/07/2019 22:18

Maybe he didn't realise. I would assume they still monitor you. I don't think its that strange a conversation.

nauseous5000 · 22/07/2019 22:18

Hm he prob needs to know cos oral rumours spread so he might heed so look more closely, or you might be on long lasting meds etc. I'd guess he's not asking to annoy you, more to make sure your oral health has a thorough check...

TheInvestigator · 22/07/2019 22:19

Well, you didn't write "surgery for removal of tumour on spine". You just wrote "tumour on spine". Some benign tumours aren't removed. Doctors "watch and wait". If the surgery would be more risky than leaving a being tumour which causes no problems then they won't remove it. He was just asking; curious. Maybe making sure you don't have regular x-ray or anything incase he also needed to do an x-ray.

Iamnotagoddess · 22/07/2019 22:19

Can a tumour be monitored for that long though?! Grin

nauseous5000 · 22/07/2019 22:19

Soz. Obv meant tumours, not rumours

Tingface · 22/07/2019 22:20

Of course it can. If it can’t be removed what the fuck else do you think happens?

YABVU. Your dentist wasn’t a weirdo, he was taking a medical history.

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 22/07/2019 22:20

That is not being a weirdo Hmm

Iamnotagoddess · 22/07/2019 22:20

I guess I just assumed by saying I had been hospitalised for it he would then assume it was to remove it - I felt like a bit of a twat 😂

YABU
Of course you have you fill out your medical history every time! Hmm For a whole host of reasons- for example if you were taking a blood thinning drug and they had to take a tooth out you could bleed to death.
Some illnesses and drugs are contra-indicated to treatment- hence the dentist enquiring about your tumour and your medical history.
You sound like a difficult patient

Iamnotagoddess · 22/07/2019 22:21

@Tingface - there’s no need to be so rude.

The removal wasn’t a huge amount of fun Hmm

You sound like a difficult patient

Because I have posted on an anonymous forum about it after answering all his questions perfectly politely? Hmm

LikeDolphinsCanSwin · 22/07/2019 22:23

You have been just as rude about the dentist, who was just doing his job.

If you are going to dish it out, you also need to be able to take it ...

Orchidflower1 · 22/07/2019 22:24

Maybe in future op just put the date of procedures and the outcome - he could have thought it was 12months ago.

Singlebutmarried · 22/07/2019 22:24

Odd but I also wonder why you need to fill the form in every time.

It’s odd

Iamnotagoddess · 22/07/2019 22:25

I haven’t been rude to his face.

I have just never been questioned about the form before, and surely they should keep a record of the things that don’t change.

That isn’t going to change is it? Like if I had one arm, it’s not going to grow back is it?

OP posts:
Serin · 22/07/2019 22:25

Mines weirder than that!! He is very flamboyant and greets everyone with a hug Grin

Iamnotagoddess · 22/07/2019 22:27

Omg I wouldn’t cope with a hug 😂

Medical professional doing his job = weirdo?? Confused

Whatjusthappenedthere · 22/07/2019 22:29

Because some dental treatment is advised within 3 months of surgery.
Because he may be clarifying if it’s ok to recline you.
Because sometimes when tumours / cancers are mentioned even from a long time ago some clinicians like to respond in a way that doesn’t look as though they are not bothered and just skipping through the medical form.
Metastasis.
Medical Histories are an absolute ball ache for clinicians so you are fortunate you had a thorough one taken. I know a dentist who accidentally x rayed a pregnant woman.
Even simple procedures such as a scale and polish carries risks for certain patients / cancer patients.
