My baby has developed a boil type lump in her arm in the place which the received one of her 6 week vaccinations, she's 12 weeks now and due her next lot on Thursday.

Its only come up over the past week and got progressively worse.

Did anybody else's child get this and need I be concerned?

She seems fine in herself but I'm going to ring the GP in the morning because I'm worrying now Sad

Phone 111 and get her an out of hrs appointment and take her to the walk-in now if you. It's clearly filled with puss and I wouldnt want to risk sepsis/blood poisoning. It needs to be treated asap.

Tallgreenbottle · 22/07/2019 20:53

if you can*

Freddiefox · 22/07/2019 20:53

Was it a Bcg?

endofthelinefinally · 22/07/2019 20:54

Yes, gp needs to look at that.

RockyRolly · 22/07/2019 20:54

Wtf get to the hospital!

WreckTangled · 22/07/2019 20:54

No advice but I'm really surprised they did it in her arm. They're less likely to get a reaction in their thigh hence why all vaccinations under 12 months (and usually that one too) are given there. Definitely get it looked at. Has she got a temperature?

Just re-read and you said six weeks, are you in the UK? As first one is given at 8 weeks.

It looks sore and she's so little that it's safer to get it checked.

Mischone · 22/07/2019 20:55

I'm calling DP to leave work and take us to the hospital now Sad

My dd had this following one set of injections (whatever is given in each leg). Very very similar looking. We took her to the gp who had no idea. In the end she was referred to a surgeon and had them both drained in clinic. We had to wait 6 months for the appointment.....

Mischone · 22/07/2019 20:56

She had BCG at approx 2 weeks old then the 6 weeks vaccinations 6 weeks ago, this boil has come up this week

I remember one of my DSs having similar and I also remember being told it was normal. It flared up and down over the course of a few months iirc.

However I don’t remember which vaccination it was from. I think you’re doing the right thing having it checked tomorrow.

Verite1 · 22/07/2019 20:57

Just to ask again - was it the bcg? We were told that they normally turn into a boil/blister.

Robs20 · 22/07/2019 20:57

Ps should have said. One of dd’s actually drained itself whilst we were waiting for the surgical review!! Was v gross.

Mischone · 22/07/2019 20:57

I can't find our thermometer anywhere to take her temp. She is warm but we all are, it's so hot in here. Have got fan on and windows open but still too warm.

I'm having an anxiety attack now oh Jesus Christ. My poor baby it looks so so sore.

TheCatInAHat · 22/07/2019 20:58

Surely that’s the bcg? The 8 week jabs always go in the thighs. That can be a normal reaction to the bcg vaccination. They don’t give it in all areas of the country dependant on prevalence of TB but if you live in certain areas (e.g most of London) it’s part of the vaccination schedule.

HighwayCat · 22/07/2019 20:59

It’s the BCG and normal. It takes up to 2-3 months to appear. Routine 6 week vaccinations are normally done in their legs, are you sure anything apart from BCG was in the arm?

WreckTangled · 22/07/2019 20:59

Oh if it's BCG I think that's normal? That's why lots of people have a big scar from it. We don't have it on our schedule in this area so not something I see much.

Ohyesiam · 22/07/2019 21:01

Looks like an an ess caused by the injection taking in some bacteria from her skin. It happens, but I only saw it twice in years of nursing.
Bcg bluster is a vesicle filled with clear fluid.

Mischone · 22/07/2019 21:02

Sorry I'm not with it at all, it must be the BCG yes

I've got PTSD from her birth trauma and I'm not retaining information very well. Upon reflection I'm almost certain the 6 weeks vaccinations were in her legs yes, followed by a liquid given orally.

It must be the BCG

orangeshoebox · 22/07/2019 21:05

it does look like a bcg mark tbh.

from nhs

unless she is unwell, not drinking, unusually sleepy I wouldn't worry. if she is, make a gp appointment.
but do keep that pock out of the sun and well moisturised once healed to reduce scarring.

IDontLikeZombies · 22/07/2019 21:06

DS1 had exactly the same thing after the BCG. The nurse told me it was a sterile collection of pus. It burst and a ridiculous amount of pus came out and it was completely fine.
Get someone to have a look at it but it will be okay Flowers

Mischone · 22/07/2019 21:07

We do live in London and HV told us to make sure she has the BCG, she had it when she was 2 weeks old. There has been no blister or sore whatsoever until this week. Prior to this appearing there was a little hard area in the injection site but that was it.

It looks awful

OP posts:
JazzyGG · 22/07/2019 21:08

Do babies have BCG now then?

Mischone · 22/07/2019 21:09

Do you think it would be an over reaction if I took her to the hospital tonight? I'm glad to read that others say this is normal for the BCG but I'm in a bit of a tizz now.

I had sepsis when she was born and I don't want to take any risks with her Sad

When DC1 had the BCG injection it turned into something similar looking several weeks later

Didn't need any treatment/other intervention for it, healed up fine

Looks like a BCG injection? They do all the immunisations into a thigh/both sides
