AIBU Claire's ears piercing

So I have just been to Claire to get my children's ears pierced (they wanted them done) my older daughter (9) begged and begged to have them done, I told her yes..
So the earring were got out put in the gun and she went into melt down.

To cut a long story short after encouragement from one assistant who was lovely to the manager who had had enough for the day (her attitude was shit once my daughter had started to get itchy feet) she didn't have them done. However I have still had to pay for them as they came out of the pack and were no longer sterile

So I have basically just paid £75 for one pair of ears to be pierced with earrings, a pair of earrings which are possibly never going to be worn and some solution.

AIBU to feel really pissed off at been charge £37.50 for some 9ct gold earrings ?

@Triskaidekaphilia

Off topic, but just wanted to say I love your username!

@GlacindaTheTroll why thank you :)

YABU to go to a fashion shop for piercings. Find a reputable piercing and tattoo artist that will do it properly with a needle. The rest is unfortunate, but I assume someone can wear the earrings at some point, sterilise them and you or your other daughter have them.

Hairspray I didn't realise it was a shit idea until I can on to mumsnet and was told how bad Claire's are. My youngest had hers done there and at the minute all seems okay 6 days later although I didn't listen to there after care advise I took the advise of the people on here.

Claire's told me to turn them 180* both ways and use solution... I also check the NHS website and that say what everyone else was saying on here.. don't turn and salt water.

Went to Birmingham yesterday and Accessorize are also now piercing (not sure if it's new) I have never known them donor before? I suppose they will possibly be given the short and minimal training as Claire's

I have never understood why they started using studs for new piercings, for the reason Elphame has said. 'When I were young' they were always rings and we were told to spin them, they healed really quickly.

stilldontgiveaf · 28/07/2019 09:41

@trollopolis but it is blunt force trauma... the end of the stud isn't sharp, therefore creating more unnecessary trauma to the area than a needle would. I had the top of my ear pierced with a gun as a young teen and it shattered the cartilage in my ear. Safe to say that didn't heal well at all. It's not a myth. It's something we are taught when becoming trained piercers using the needle method. 🙄

stilldontgiveaf · 28/07/2019 09:43

@millimollimandi it's to avoid irritation from the spinning of the ring. Causes it to become inflamed more, so we now suggest using studs for the first few weeks.

@stilldontgiveaf

The earring isn't blunt, it's the Studex system and the earring is pointed like a needle.

We went to a piercing studio for my DD, they use this, but the individual cartridges which are sterile. They wouldn't do needle piercings on under 16s.

stilldontgiveaf · 28/07/2019 10:29

@DropZoneOne I haven't seen the studex systems used in the places in my area that aren't piercing studios, it wouldn't be so bad if they used those.

That's one rule I'll never understand is why needles aren't allowed to be used on under 16s. Over here, we either have places like Claire's or Pharmacies that offer children's piercings using a gun without a sharp earring, or we have piercing studios that are in tattoo studios and they don't pierce under 18s. Causes a massive conflict 😂

PinkFlowerFairy · 28/07/2019 21:21

Our body piercing place used a needle.for my 10 year old as theh prefer it. Its quite well known in our area so has a fantastic reputation.

The stud we have has a ball back and front so its cleaner forr for healing.

My daughter has just had her 2nd piercing done at a local tattoo/ piercing shop. Very patient staff member, sterile needle used and all dine in a private room. Cost £10. You were ripped off !!

The earring isn't blunt, it's the Studex system and the earring is pointed like a needle.

A lot of places use the Caflon system, and they don't look that sharp at all. And to "gun" doesn't look easy to clean.
