Mumsnetters, do you actually read?

I've been viewing mumsnet for many years, although I have seen some great advice on here, and also some very strange advice. The running theme of mumsnet seems to be, OP's not getting the advice or comments that are helpful or even relevant to the OP, because the posters have clearly not read their posts properly and have just jumped on the bandwagon of other posters going off topic?!

Do you read? Do you get annoyed seeing this happen? Has this happened on your post?

To think there there's a huge lack of reading comprehension on Mumsnet?

It's so frustrating. The OP will ask, for example, 'can anyone recommend the best way of getting from Brighton to Norfolk? I'm travelling alone and can't drive', and there'll be numerous responses saying 'the public transport isn't great, I'd take your car OP'.

Or there'll be a post saying 'I'm upset because my friend seems to have ghosted me. I've tried ringing and texting and even knocked on her door! She's alive because she's posting on Facebook', and then there's the answers of 'are you not worried something has happened to her OP?! If it was my friend I'd go round and knock on the door!'

It happens in simple threads to upsetting ones and it drives me insane.

Well, I read the thread starting with the above post a couple of days ago.

Lifecraft · 22/07/2019 15:19

I completely disagree. I think a lot of the time people don't read the OP properly, and end up getting advise that isn't helpful or even relevant.

I'm not sure how you can deny that this happens!

Of course you shouldn’t wedge it sideways, what a completely ridiculous suggestion.

KurriKurri · 22/07/2019 15:45

Doesn't really matter if people read the OP or not - I reckon about 95% of the population talk pure shite anyway, and reading the question won't stop them doing that.

Youneedto · 22/07/2019 15:45

@Lifecraft this made me laugh!! Thanks for being light hearted. It really bugs me to see it happening though, especially when someone needs help and advice and have been clear in their op.

@LaMarschallin, "apologies, I must have missed this"

OP posts:
Youneedto · 22/07/2019 15:50

@KurriKurri I often do wonder whether the people posting the advice, actually live by the advice they give.

apologies, I must have missed this

Easily done. I doubt even the most dedicated MNer sees every thread Shock

It just tickled me given the question about reading

And you may be interested in perusing it.

StressyDressyHeels · 22/07/2019 15:53

People like to goad about one tiny element of a post and completely miss the point of the post IMO.

TheFridgeRaider · 22/07/2019 15:54

I often do wonder whether the people posting the advice, actually live by the advice they give.

I hope not all of themShock Some advice is shocking and inaccurate.

Lifecraft · 22/07/2019 15:55

The ones that make me laugh are:
OP - I'm at my wits end. My car is 25 yrs old and has failed it's MOT. I'm on the bones of my arse and I don't know what I'm going to do. I have 3 kids to get to school and there's no public transport option.

Reply- 3 kids. You just have to get the latest Volvo XC90. It's just fabulous. I get 4 kids in there easily, plus the Labrador and all my tackle for when we go riding. Took is down to Klosters when we went skiing and everyone was so comfortable. We were fresh as daisies when we arrived and so were able to ski as soon as we arrived.

Shodan · 22/07/2019 15:56

It happens a lot on here and never fails to remind me of my mother AND my XH - both extremely fond of listening to half a conversation and chipping in with their half-baked (and irrelevant!) opinions.

I've learned to do what I did with them- filter them out unless they have something useful to say.

Jeremybearimybaby · 22/07/2019 15:56

Awwww, I hoped this was going to be a book recommendation thread!
I'll go 'The Hunting Party' by Lucy Foley. Bit predictable, but she sets the mood quite well Grin

TruffleShuffles · 22/07/2019 15:57

Well how old are the children? (asked on every thread about children at least 6 times when the ages are quite clearly the in the OP or title) Angry

YANBU to think a lot of people don’t read the opening post.

Shodan · 22/07/2019 15:57

The other thing that often happens is that someone will pounce on a tiny detail (often irrelevant to the main point of the OP) and derail the thread into being all about that.

That is possibly more irritating.

Lifecraft · 22/07/2019 15:57

It's actually against the law to give misleading advice on an internet forum. You can get a £425 fine and 3 months in jail, plus 6 points on your driving licence.

00100001 · 22/07/2019 15:58

Cancel the cheque OP....

TheFridgeRaider · 22/07/2019 16:00

@Lifecraft 😂

Youneedto · 22/07/2019 16:08

@Jeremybearimybaby, sorry to disappoint, you could follow mumsnet tradition, just completly go off topic and start talking about books, a few posts in of other people talking about books too and it would be like my OP never happened! Grin

OP posts:
Youneedto · 22/07/2019 16:13

@Shodan, ou absolutely very annoying!

Another one that gets me - OP- my mother said she would look after the grandchildren and now she has declined and there is no one else to have my children and I already have plans.

Posters- well your mum has every right to decide not to look after your children, they're your children! Cant you ask someone else OP?
