HR job interview with 'role-play' - help!!

Posting for traffic. Very regular on MN but NC for this.

I've just heard I've been offered a 2nd interview for an HR job I really want. I haven't done a pure HR role before, lots of relevant stuff but always with an HR department as back-up, so I need to perform really well to get it. The first interview was a traditional Q&A and basic skills test, the 2nd will involve some role-play elements to see how I react in different situations. Any tips or ideas on how best to prepare would be massively appreciated.

Have you got someone who will practice with you?

Remember - they don’t expect you to know everything. Often these tests are actually designed to show how you would react in a situation where you don’t know the answer. It will therefore likely be less about what you know and more about your manner, how you respond to people, how you come across as a person.

Do a few practice scenarios (have a friend or partner pretend they’re telling HR about a bereavement, sexual harassment, asking for a pay rise etc) so that you feel more comfortable with the ‘acting’ part of it.

You’ll be grand! Good luck!

Thank you, I think it's the trying to second-guess what might come up that's driving me potty.

Usually the scenario will be performance related , disciplinary, or personnel with a problem. Ask questions and take notes ensure you try to mirror the other persons’ body language,

If it is performance, look at ways that you can help the person reach peak performance. Ask them for input on how they would like to be helped. Always get an action plan documented and agreed.

Personal and discipline are not so easy. For discipline you may be given the company policy. Ask the person if they understand why they are there and if the Policy has been explained to them. Document and agree a way forward. If someone has a personal problem, don’t over promise, time off, easing workload for example Be sympathetic but say that you may need to speak to someone more senior. Ensure you get an agreement to discuss their problem and assure them of confidentiality.

During the role play exercise, remember who you work for, and it isn't the employee.

Thank you, that's really helpful.
