AIBU to take a day off work?

I am doing a summer placement that I earned as an award that ends at the end of August. This has the potential to turn into full time employment next year once I graduate.

I was working last week with someone who took a week's vacation and returned with a terrible respiratory infection. We were together for 2 days in a van while he coughed and hacked.

In the last week, 2 people who share an office with him (mine is 1 over) have fallen ill - one took a day off, the second has not taken time off.

I know that this position for me is essentially a 3-month long interview and am wary to take time off, but feel like I have been kicked by a mule. I am hesitant to take time off lest I be seen as a shirker, but if I go in hacking and wheezing, I am apt to just continue spreading this infection. Also, as I work around heavy machinery on building sites (inspector) if I am not 100%, safety could be an issue.

So, should I go in and tough it out, would I be more sensible to stay home tomorrow?

IF you are too ill to work, don’t go in. If you’re not, go to work.

Sounds more sensible to stay at home I think

Fortunately, my absence will be tolerated for a day, so I guess I can wait until the morning to decide.
