Best way to get splinter out

Ds (7 years) got three splinters right under his skin on this thumb today at a local farm when he was playing in the hay. I tried to get the out with tweezers and he has been making a gigantonormous fuss Blush.

So the three pieces are still under his skin and I was wondering if there is any way I can coax the bloody things out. He has had a long soak in the bath after which I attempted to get the splinters out again to no avail.

Wise mumsnetter, what to do? Just leave it be?

Have you any of the Calpol / neurofen syringes? Put that over the splinter, pull up and 9/10 there it is inside the syringe!

If the syringe doesn’t work, soak again, dry, put on magnesium sulphate paste and a plaster on top. Should be out by morning.

Right, I'm going back decade's now, but my mum used to mix sugar and soap/a bit of washing up liquid, to make a paste. Paste on over the splinter. Plaster/bandage wrapped round and it always seemed to work for us.

I find putting the adhesive part of a plaster over it draws it out and the splinter will be stuck on the sticky part when you remove it.

Thank you. In the absence of magnesium sulphate I have put a bit of arnica cream on a plaster and stuck it on. Will try to get hold of ms and or try the sugar paste tomorrow.
might have grown new grey hair with all the fuss, thanks ds

adhesive part of a plaster sounds also like a good idea

Use a credit card, press against the skin at the tip of the spelk and push towards to entrance wound. Should push the spelk out the way it came in

Put a plaster on it - the sticky bit over the plaster.
Leave it for a while and pull it off.

Over the splinter!!! Not over the plaster!!

I'm interested in this. It happened my dd 2 years ago. I tried with a tweezers. I bought magnesium sulphate. It didn't draw it out. I was afraid of infection. But anyway it was 2 years ago and it's still there now Blush I hope it's ok to leave...

Leave them. Splinters will come out on their own eventually.

I'm now desperate to try the calpol syringe theory though!
