I am being U by posting this here really but I don’t know where else to put it, hoping someone can help.

Ideally I need a new bed frame as the the metal one in our rented flat is old and rubbish and so I have to sleep in a dip in the middle of the bed. The landlord is happy for me to replace it but I’d prefer to wait til we move home (hopefully soon) as that’s one less thing to move and I’ll be able to spend a bit more on it then to get a good one.

My question is, can you get something like slats or something that goes straight on top of a bed frame to provide a better surface for the mattress to go on as an interim fix? Or has anyone had this problem and successfully just used a piece of plywood and if so, how thick does it need to be?

Sorry if there’s an obvious answer, I’ve tried googling but if such a thing does exist I’m not using the right search terms to be able to find it.

Thanks.

Just to add, it’s definitely the metal base that’s the problem, I have an Emma mattress bought earlier this year.

DP made slats out of wood he bought from B&Q for our ageing bed which was dipped in the middle. Would that be an option?

It wasn't a lot of work, just a bit of shaving the ends to make them fit.

You can buy individual or rolls of bed slats on eBay.

Would that fix the issue?

Large pieces of chipboard OP.

IKEA do the slats (and a huge metal supporting bar) separately from their bed frames. However they are obviously designed to go with their beds.

Perhaps if you're that way inclined you could DIY something to get them to fit on your current frame

I'd just pop to b&q and buy a sheet of mdf or similar. It will do the job and you won't need to worry about taking it with you when you move.

Chipboard, but then turn the mattress more often to avoid damp?

MIdgebabe · 21/07/2019 15:09

Engageing brain here... most diy stores will cut wood to size for you, so make your own slats.

I had a rubbish bed frame in student flat, it was so dipped it was like sleeping in a hammock. It was a furnished flat so we asked the landlord to pay for heavy boards to put under mattress. Made a big difference
