I work in a care home. Every year there is a gastric flu outbreak.
Most years I take it in my stride, up my hand washing and make sure work clothes are washed separately and on a higher temp.
Last year one broke out and I was a mess. I came home and lay towels at the side of each bed, everyone had their personal bucket, hand gel and assigned glass for water. I had a kit ready to go on the landing which contained disposable gloves, disinfectants, bin bags, clean sheets and pj's for all.
I couldn't sleep because I was convinced one of the kids would be ill in the night and I'd not hear them.
I constantly felt sick.
Not one of us caught the bug.
I went to the GP after, at the advice of concerned colleagues and family, and had my anti-depressant dosage upped and was referred for therapy.
This year the annual bug hit and again, I upped my hand hygiene (is already top level) and washed uniform separately. But there was no manic assembling of sick kits etc, as my meds are working!
None of us caught the bug this time either.
If you're going to get it you'll get it, there really isn't much you can do other than practice good hand hygiene and avoid contact with known contaminated people. Which isn't always possible
