To think there there's a huge lack of reading comprehension on Mumsnet?

It's so frustrating. The OP will ask, for example, 'can anyone recommend the best way of getting from Brighton to Norfolk? I'm travelling alone and can't drive', and there'll be numerous responses saying 'the public transport isn't great, I'd take your car OP'.

Or there'll be a post saying 'I'm upset because my friend seems to have ghosted me. I've tried ringing and texting and even knocked on her door! She's alive because she's posting on Facebook', and then there's the answers of 'are you not worried something has happened to her OP?! If it was my friend I'd go round and knock on the door!'

It happens in simple threads to upsetting ones and it drives me insane.

OP posts:

Hmmm. Far more common is someone telling a poster to ‘RTFT!’ when it’s 22 pages long. Yep. Like that’s going to happen.

MonkeyToesOfDoom · 20/07/2019 17:57

Not seen one for a while but I like the ones like:

"Can someone recommend me a skirt, I have a budget of max £40"

"How about this one for £50?"

MyCatHatesEverybody · 20/07/2019 18:08

Sometimes giving the school year instead of DC's age is relevant e.g it clarifies whether an 11yo is in the last year of primary school or the first year of secondary. There's a very recent thread when the opening post mentions the OP's year 4 DS then in the next sentence she says "he's 9..." Cue lots of replies along the lines of "I'd never let my 4 year old walk to school by themselves."

YANBU.

toffee1000 · 20/07/2019 18:11

Or the threads where OP is having an issue with whatever, they state that they’ve tried a, b and c...
The first reply?
“Have you tried b?”
HmmHmm

SilverDragonfly1 · 20/07/2019 18:26

Haven't read the thread, but I think the problem is with other people's reading comprehension.

Livebythecoast · 20/07/2019 18:27

@Tuhelime I'm sorry. I genuinely thought it was a test as people post some mad things on here. Fwiw I do agree with people skimming posts etc.

TheFatberg · 20/07/2019 18:29

I think people are too quick to offer their tuppence worth, so start replying before they've properly read everything.

I do think on a 22 page thread, it's annoying when people just reply to the OP. You don't have to read every post, but at least look for the OP's updates.

Herocomplex · 20/07/2019 18:36

I quite enjoy the misunderstandings. I’m not fond of the name-calling though, attacking people personally for putting forward a point of view is depressing.

Livebythecoast · 20/07/2019 18:39

@Owlypants
Yes, got the 'what what' too Grin

Herocomplex · 20/07/2019 18:40

And I agree about the comprehension, especially when there’s hurtful comments in the reply as a result.

Silverdragonfly 😂💐

Sewrainbow · 20/07/2019 18:41

I agree with you op!

groundanchochillipowder · 20/07/2019 18:41

YANBU!

OvalCanvas · 20/07/2019 18:48

LTB

DontCallMeShitley · 20/07/2019 19:00

Why are you driving from Brighton to Norfolk to knock on her door, is she posting on social media?

Likethebattle · 20/07/2019 19:13

‘My husbands d I have been married for 6 years and have 2 children...’

‘Are you married?’
‘Do you have children together?’

It’s right there in the post!

Likethebattle · 20/07/2019 19:15

@MyCatHatesEverybody i’m Scottish and wouldn’t know what year is the last in Primary and first in secondary in England. Is year 7 the final primary year like Primary 7 is Scotland? Genuinely haven’t a clue?

SaskiaRembrandt · 20/07/2019 19:18

I haven't RTFT but have you thought about going for a spa day, OP? I'm sure that would sort out whatever it is that I haven't bothered to read about.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/07/2019 19:26

Is year 7 the final primary year like Primary 7 is Scotland?

It's the first year of secondary.

Willow2017 · 20/07/2019 19:32

It’s not a lack of reading comprehension - people are skim reading on their phones while doing other real life things, so they might miss the odd bit of information. Didn’t realise I could only go on mumsnet if I gave it my full, undivided attention

If you arent reading what the op is actually about how the heck can you give any advice/help on it?

Thats when so many posters just jump in with totally irrelevant advice or start jumping on the op for something that never actually happened!

EatingBreadAndHoney · 20/07/2019 19:58

Did you cancel the cheque and LTB?

HollowTalk · 20/07/2019 19:59

Then you get ones that say "My husband has tons of holidays with his mates and I'm left at home with the kids" and people say "Well you should go on holiday on your own!" It misses the point that the OP and their children might like a holiday altogether.

HeronLanyon · 20/07/2019 20:04

But a spa day can really help sometimes.

YANBU - sometimes even when I have seen updates I can’t see the op post when I reply and just stupidly forget something.

Have learned it’s easier to keep replies short to avoid this.

Booboo66 · 20/07/2019 20:14

People just never seem to want to answer the actual question. It's the same all over. I posted on a fb group asking where I could get English notes from a machine for my upcoming holiday. I was inundated with alternative holiday money options and not one suggestion of which cash machine might provide me with the notes. That's just one example, it happens nearly every time.

ethelfleda · 20/07/2019 20:23

YANBU OP. But then, I never did like baking so I wouldn’t know how to make a decent Victoria Sponge if you paid me.

IamWaggingBrenda · 20/07/2019 20:31

I’d take your car to nip round and knock on her door OP. Grin There are also some funny posters.
