My neighbours are hiding a dog

We live in an apartment in an old building which is split into several others. Five in total.

In the lease it says we are not meant to have pets with four legs. We all have the same rules...recently a couple moved into the ground floor flat. They are letting the flat through an agency.

Last weekend we saw them walking a dog in the park and Dh says he has heard it also in their flat. We never see them going in and out with it though, wonder if they usually take it our after dark or when no-one else around!

I wouldn't do anything. I feel for people in rented having to give up their pets

I’m struggling to find somewhere which allows my dog :( please leave them be unless you suspect poor treatment of the animal.

We aren't going to do / say anything. It seems quite quiet, cockapoo type dog? Thought it might be quite hard for them though keeping it secret.

I agree with the others keep quiet, they may have had to move there with no other option and it’s not nice having to give up your pet particularly if it’s because someone ‘grassed’ on you, if you haven’t seen them go in and out with it could they just be dog walkers?

I would let the agency know. There's a good reason why landlords don't want pets, especially in flats, these people are taking the piss.

Don't do anything.

It could be devastating for them if they have to give it up. If it's causing you no problem ignore.

Leave them be, it’s very difficult to find pet friendly homes to rent, it might be temporary.

I would say something because if they have a secret dog other people will start getting secret dogs

We run the management committee and might be tricky if any of the other flats mention it. Guess would need to tell the agency then. otherwise will let sleeping dogs lie

I hid a cat in a rented flat, she was (is) one of the absolute best things in my life and I would have been distraught if I had to get rid of her. We found it really difficult to get rented accommodation that allowed pets. We own now so we're fine. If it's not causing you an issue then it's up to them to decide what's best. I agree that they might find it difficult to keep the secret but that's on them.

It's not just landlords that don't want pets in flats other residents don't want the nuisance of pets that are kept in unsuitable housing
Even if you own the flat there may be a clause in the lease which prohibits certain pets

My hairdresser has just bought a dog - the thing arrived from Russia with a dog nanny! He keeps it secretly in his flat. I think it’s a really bad thing to do when you’ve been specifically told no pets.

Is this the reverse of the thread about the batshit neighbours who complain of a non-existent dog?

Unless it affects you I wouldn’t do anything. That said, I do think people are unreasonable to move into a flat that doesn’t allow pets with a dog. When we rented, we just looked at pet friendly properties. I am annoyed by our neighbours who have a dog and haven’t told their landlord as it keeps trying to get through the rubbish old garden fence owned by their LL to our dog (not in a friendly way) and we can’t complain about the state of the fence without dobbing them in about the secret dog. It puts neighbours in a really awkward position.

If you have a pet then you should stick to pet-friendly properties, if other people abide by the rules then why can't you?

There's no good reason for landlords to not allow dogs or cats, as long as they are house trained. Worst case scenario they should charge a bigger deposit to those with pets if they're worried. Pets are much loved members of many families and it's disgusting that some landlords make people have to choose between giving up their pets, or not having a home. The majority of landlords don't allow pets and I think it's vile.
