Aibu to expect £50 for this bike?

We bought a new Raleigh bike for my DS in 2016 when he was 4. He tried a couple of times and somehow never liked it. It just remained in the garage ever since. We bought it for £100 and now I put it on eBay for £50. No one wants it! It looks new, but it was in the garage since 2016 :( Do bikes wear out with time even when they are not used?

Aibu to expect £50 for it? Half price??

It’s quite hard to sell bikes second hand. My local bike shop, which used to have a second hand section, no longer does. So many bikes are stolen by thieves and then the thieves try to sell them, it was no longer worth their while. There may be a second hand bikes organisation near you- you could take a look. I sold three old bikes this way but didn’t get much for them. Children’s bikes for a 4 year old can be bought new very cheaply.

NoSquirrels · 20/07/2019 09:39

If you can get a new bike fur a 4-year-old for under £100 mist people won’t pay £50 secondhand on eBay - it’s a hassle to pick up, you’re not sure it’s working til you get there etc

Raleigh is a so-so brand - it’s not an Islabike or a Frog it whatever.

You’d have more luck on local FB pages probably - ask people to make you offers and see?

Confrontayshunme · 20/07/2019 09:41

We are a cycling family. No car, DH does long tours and sportives, I commute with babyseat and trailer, DD7 cycles to from school and does velodrome, DD3 does balance bike. We do NOT pay full price for kids bikes or any kit except our trailer. Also, Raleigh is an okay brand but nothing special. Kids' bike are ten a penny. DD7's last three bikes have been free from other cycle club members and we just repaired tyres and brakes. And yes, tyres and chain will degrade a bit, even in a dry garage. Every secondhand child bike should be serviced for brakes and tyres so ppl buying will maybe not want to spen £50 on top of that.

I wouldn't pay £50 for a second hand bike. I bought my daughter a Raleigh bike second hand that had been used twice for £30. The bike looked like new. I would lower your price to about £20 for a four year olds bike.

hazell42 · 20/07/2019 10:10

But its not new.
Its a second hand bike
No one is going to take your word for it that it has only been used a couple of times
Tbh you would have trouble giving it away
If you go on sites like freecycle there are loads of them
Kids outgrow them regularly and so there is always a good supply of them for nothing or next to nothing
If you took it to a car boot sale you could ask for a tenner.
And accept 6 quid

Hoppinggreen · 20/07/2019 10:13

I just give ours away to be honest, we live on a large estate and people who want to get rid of bikes just put them on the FB page. I’ve had 2 and given away 2 so it’s about even
I would like to sell them but it’s too much hassle for very little money
Funnily enough I’m abroad at the moment and waiting for someone to come and collect my sons old bike!

Mintjulia · 20/07/2019 10:17

I sold my ds’s first bike which was also a Raleigh, plus the helmet for £20, just before Xmas. Both were immaculate and I delivered them locally.

Pinktinker · 20/07/2019 10:20

I know it’s a shame because you bought it new and paid so much but perhaps this will be a valuable lesson, only buy kids bikes second hand!

It will probably sell for £20-30 max. Collection items on eBay are tricky, obviously someone in your local area needs to want it.

EleanorReally · 20/07/2019 10:23

yes, i would reduce the price

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 20/07/2019 10:27

check the "sold prices" of similar bikes on ebay, that will give you a much more accurate idea.

A third of the RPP seem reasonable, but have a look. Some CF want everything for nothing but you can find decent buyers too!

EleanorReally · 20/07/2019 10:58

check facebook marketing also

MyNameIsRachelAndIWantAPresent · 20/07/2019 11:01

At the school fair we set up a second hand bike stand - couldn't give them away.

Chickychoccyegg · 20/07/2019 11:16

try facebook marketplace rather than ebay.

Stoptheworldpleasethankyou · 20/07/2019 11:36

Unless it’s something really special £20-£30 is the price and even then it may take awhile.

RollOnSummerBreak · 20/07/2019 11:49

I'd only pay 20 as halfords often do them new for not much more than 50 with a guarantee and service. I got dsd one for 60 BN

MountPheasant · 20/07/2019 12:08

I always think of it this way OP- if you had the bike new, it’s unfair to sell it for half price, because it means that you and the person buying it both paid the same for it, but you got it brand new.

I know you’re saying it’s in perfect condition but just to give you an insight as to why it may not be selling.

As a rule of thumb, 1/3 of RRP unless it’s an in demand item.

MorbidlyObeseWhale · 20/07/2019 12:10

If I was looking for a second hand bike for a small child I wouldn’t pay more than £25. £30 absolute max.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 20/07/2019 12:13

£20/30 absolute max. We only got £40 for an Isla bike for similar age. Small children’s bikes don’t go for much at all. second have

CrunchTime0 · 20/07/2019 12:31

I’d only pay £20, maybe £30 but that’s it second hand

Boysnme · 20/07/2019 12:47

We have noticed that only expensive lightweight bikes like Isla, Frog hold their value. Any others we have sold we have sold very cheaply or given away.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 20/07/2019 14:52

it’s unfair to sell it for half price, because it means that you and the person buying it both paid the same for it, but you got it brand new.

that's one of the most bonkers reasoning I have read on here Grin

VirginiaCreeper · 20/07/2019 15:11

I think you'd be lucky to get £10 for a second hand kid's bike.

GrabbyGertie · 20/07/2019 15:44

£50 is much too high. I've just bought a brand new bike with a genuine 50% price reduction.
I'd pay £20 for a second hand kids bike in good condition.

BeanBag7 · 20/07/2019 15:48

I would be more likely to buy from facebook marketplace rather than eBay. You have the option to haggle and you can go and see it before being committed to buy. Also the messaging service works better - you usually hear back from people directly and can have a conversation whereas the eBay email thing is a bit rubbish.

HobbyIsCodeForDogging · 20/07/2019 15:56

I actually agree with the reasoning of not selling something for half price! You'd both have paid the same price but one of you got the new product and one of you got a second hand product. For that reason, you should only try to sell for well below half.

I'd be really surprised if anyone wanted to pay more than about £20 for a second hand bike unless it was a very top end one (which Raleigh is not).
