To ask if you can be named on the council tax for 2 different properties?

I have my own property with dh. However I need to stay with my mum 3-5 days a week for a few months. She is single occupancy and wants to put me on her council tax also.

Is it possible to be named on 2? Both properties are 2 different counties if that makes a difference

The Council Tax should remain in your Mum's name if you don't own or rent the property. If she is being really honest she could ring her Council and say you are staying there, but are fully liable for CTax elsewhere, and that she wants to lose her 25% discount. You then pay her the 25% difference directly.

See below for the hierarchy of liability. You do not appear on there as your Mum's house is not your only or main home. HTH.

Council Tax liability

To establish who is liable for the payment of Council Tax, there is a set 'hierarchy'.

Look down the list below and as soon as you reach a description that applies to a person in your home, they will be the person liable for the Council Tax.

A resident freeholder (so for owner-occupied property the owner is liable)
A resident leaseholder (this includes assured tenants under the housing act 1988)
A resident statutory or secure tenant
A resident licensee
A resident
The owner (this applies where the dwelling has no residents)

A resident is a person of 18 years or over and lives in the dwelling as their only or main home.

If your mum's house isn't your main residence then she doesn't have to lose her discount. If she did you could argue the home you share with your dh is no longer your main residence and get him to claim it there. But that shouldn't be allowed, as it will continue to be your main residence and your mum's address won't be, it'll be used as a second place of residence for you and won't affect her discount

Thanks, yes she's just honest and wants to let the council know. I'll pass this info on to her
