To have a drink in a bar alone?

Acunningruse · 19/07/2019 13:08

Tonight I finish work at 6pm. DS finishes his class in the next town at 7:30pm. To go home first I would be going out of my way by about 15 minutes.

Would you, whilst waiting for DS:
A) work late Hmm
B) go home then go out again
C) go to supermarket - nothing immediately essential needed but could always get some bits
D)go for a walk (though town not most scenic)
E) go to a bar and have a small glass wine
(as driving)
F) something else?

Here solves it all: go to the pub and order a large cola whilst you wait, maybe a starter to line your stomach (leave your car at the pub, get a taxi home that night)

PooWillyBumBum · 19/07/2019 15:05

Nothing wrong with a drink alone but I’d probably have a non alcoholic beer or a coffee if driving. And treat myself to a book or magazine.

Bluntness100 · 19/07/2019 15:07

I don't drink at all when I'm driving, and certainly wouldn't with my child in the car, I'd maybe have a coffee or something, or go for a wander.

userxx · 19/07/2019 21:44

@YouJustDoYou one small glass of wine whilst driving isn't illegal.

Wondering333 · 20/07/2019 07:51

Well this is two different questions really. No of course YANBU to have a drink in a bar alone (there’ve been so many posts lately from people asking if it’s unreasonable to do things alone....No, it’s not). But as pps said, I never drink anything if I’m driving so would have a soft drink. And in your circs would just see what I most fancied, maybe a walk instead to stretch my legs.

Wondering333 · 20/07/2019 07:51

Never drink anything alcoholic* Blush

SuperSara · 20/07/2019 07:57

SHE'LL BE DRIVING.

SO. FUCKING. WHAT?

OP came here to ask opinions on whether she should go to a bar alone for an hour, not for your opinion on what drink she should choose.

Start your own hand-wringing thread if you want to moan about that.

username678889 · 20/07/2019 07:58

I'd probably go to the supermarket, I never have time so I usually need something. If you don't yes go for a drink maybe not a bar a coffee somewhere . They usually have WiFi so that would kill some time .

AppropriateAdult · 20/07/2019 08:11

Well I certainly wouldn't have a glass of wine if I was driving - what would be the point?

Hmm Do you only drink if you want to get drunk, YouJustDoYou? Some people actually like the taste of wine, believe it or not. One small glass will not put the OP over the limit.

Funkyslippers · 20/07/2019 08:16

B and then E, provided I had something to read (probably buy something at B if I didn't!)

Funkyslippers · 20/07/2019 08:17

Sorry that should have been C then E

Funkyslippers · 20/07/2019 08:18

clarissa why would she need to line her stomach or leave the car and get a taxi?!

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 20/07/2019 08:32

The small glass of wine could be a spritzer!

Yes, definitely option E, OP. By Friday you will have earned the 1 1/2 hours 'R&R' and what nicer way to do it, as long as you take a book/magazine/paper to read.

nothingtowearever · 20/07/2019 09:04

I love going to the pub myself. A book and a glass of wine is heaven!

StoatofDisarray · 20/07/2019 09:10

Why wouldn't you?! It's perfectly normal.

londonloves · 20/07/2019 09:14

Jeez at the pearl clutching over one small glass of wine then driving. The limit in the Uk is not zero. It's fucking fine. Wow.

Winebottle · 20/07/2019 09:25

For 15 mins out of the way, I'd probably go home. If I was in the mood, I might go for a large glass of wine.

seven201 · 20/07/2019 10:14

Did you go for the wine op? I hope you did!

MiniMum97 · 20/07/2019 10:18

I would probably work late because that's what I do. I do not recommend that you we like me. Lol. Go to the bar.

OhNoooNotAgain · 20/07/2019 11:26

Londonloves

You do know it's not the same across the UK don't you? And also that it affects you before you hit the limit? It doesn't just magically hit you at the limit!

Graphista · 20/07/2019 11:46

LondonLoves - here in Scotland it IS effectively zero - which is as it should be imo and many others. You're affected before you even feel you are - much research to prove this.

Op pub fine but have a soft drink, cuppa or if you're lucky (as I am with my "local") they may do a cracking hot chocolate with whipped cream

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 20/07/2019 11:53

I often go to a bar/pub on my own to wait for my train - I get a later train on the days DS is at work so he can meet me at the station after, so I kill time before the train. I just take my kindle and read whilst nursing one drink. I have never felt uncomfortable.

londonloves · 20/07/2019 12:36

I didn't know it was different in diff parts of the Uk actually. But I guess as the OP was saying a small glass because she's driving, she doesn't live somewhere with zero tolerance and also is ok with the effect that one small glass would have before driving.
Anyway... what did you do OP? Hope you had a nice time.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 20/07/2019 12:39

I wouldn’t have the wine - but only because you are driving. That’s an absolute no from me. Most small wine bar glasses are 175 not 125 remember.

The going to a bar alone for a glass of wine when there are other things you could do is absolutely a very good idea. But it’s a bit of a red herring because of the driving. So my view is that you would be unreasonable. But for this reason alone.

bumblingbovine49 · 20/07/2019 12:40

A. But then I never even have one all glass of wine if driving ( I know that sounds kind of superior and I don't mean it to, as I am sure it is fine really I just never do it)
