To not send the licence back?

My provisional driving licence is due to expire.

I have zero desire to drive and received a letter claiming if I don't want to learn I should return the provisional with a letter explaining that I don't want to learn to drive.

What will happen if I just don't return the provisional?
Will I be fined?

I am not driving and have no intention of ever driving

It is a bit odd but maybe a new thing they do with expired licenses just say youve lost it

Enclume · 19/07/2019 12:32

I'd ignore.

When mine expired and I got a new one, I didn't send the old one back because I couldn't be bothered.
Nothing happened.

They tracked me down after 2 years of having an expired provisional and sent me a letter saying I must renew it or be fined, no option to return it.
I renewed because I was afraid of being fined but feel angry about being forced to keep it as I can't drive due to medical reasons anyway.
I would send it back if I were you just in case they insist you renew it instead. But I wouldn't hurry about it, buy postage stuff next time you are out doing something else.

Just send it back? You’ve spent so much time worrying about it.

Worrying about sending your provisional because it has your picture, name and address on? what do you think someone’s going to do with it? If someone wants to commit fraud the last thing they’ll be looking for is an out of date provisional licence.

You’re worried about that and too lazy to get the things you need to send it back, perhaps go get some help for these issues?

First I have to walk to the supermarket and buy paper and envelopes to write and post the letter as I have no paper or envelopes in the house because we don't write letters, any notes go on the whiteboard on the fridge or on the phone. Then I have to buy a book of stamps because the post office is inaccessible to me and the supermarket don't sell single stamps.

But presumably you have to go to the supermarket for other things from time to time. Why not just just chuck in some envelopes (no need for paper) and get some stamps whilst you're there?

ImaginaryCat · 19/07/2019 13:44

OP I hear you, putting anything in the post in this day and age is a massive faff.
And all you people saying "just buy a book of stamps", what if they've only got books of 12 First Class in stock? That's not a cheap purchase just for one stamp.
I'd ignore, and if they chase, I'd call and ask them to supply a prepaid envelope.

DontCallMeShitley · 19/07/2019 14:26

Put it in the envelope the letter came in, with the letter, ensure your address is on the inside of the window if it is a window envelope.

Write a note on the letter if you feel like it. Deface the licence if you want to but ensure they can still see relevant info.

Seal envelope, write the return address on the front along with 'Return to sender'. Circle the return to sender bit and put an arrow pointing to it just to be sure.

Bung it in a post box when you pass one.

Nothing will happen.
