AIBU to clean up for the cleaner?

New cleaner starts today! V excited. Last night I spoke to DH about having a tidy round before they come and he was astonished.

AIBU to have a mini sort out before they arrive? Or just let them get on with it?

Tidy is a good idea because they are there to clean, not tidy. If the floors and work surfaces are clear they will be able to get more cleaning done. wiping down surfaces... not necessary.

NoSauce · 19/07/2019 10:08

Yes tidy up before she comes, one it’ll make it easier for her to clean and two you’ll see the benefit.

Before my cleaner comes I make sure all surfaces and floors and clear, put all clothes and shoes away, empty the bins and just generally tidy.

NoSauce · 19/07/2019 10:10

Also ime many cleaners won’t tidy up. They might fold clothes and leave them on the bed but they won’t hang them up or put loads of toys/stuff away. My friends cleaners doesn’t even lift things up to dust or clean!

I booked a Deep Clean recently and spent the few days beforehand making sure every surface was clear and that all the kids rooms were exceptionally tidy. I didn't want them to have to waste time moving 'stuff' out of the way!! I will confess to cleaning all the toilets and possibly even the shower in the preceding two days but as I do clean them fairly regularly it wasn't too differnt to normal!! I did have to stop myself in the shower though Grin that was a bit ridiculous especially as they used the most marvellous stuff which did a better job than I ever could!!!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 19/07/2019 10:19

They are there to clean not tidy so YANBU

MsVestibule · 19/07/2019 10:37

Of course you need to tidy up! That doesn't mean putting ornaments and photos in drawers, but your cleaner should be spending her time cleaning, not tidying.

Butterflyone1 · 19/07/2019 10:39

There's a big difference between tidying and cleaning.

Yes I'd expect to do a tidy around before the cleaner comes. For example, no clutter on the floor so the cleaner can hoover. Or the same with kitchen sides.

Dieu · 19/07/2019 10:42

There isn't so much as a toy left lying on the floor when my cleaner comes. Expecting them to tidy up after you not only wastes cleaning time, but it's disrespectful.

Blondebakingmumma · 19/07/2019 10:43

You don’t want to waste money getting a cleaner to tidy before they can get on with the clean. It is a waste of money and if they have limited time they won’t get as much done

thecatsthecats · 19/07/2019 10:46

We did do a tidy before the first few cleans.

However, she's become more efficient at her cleaning, and knows our house better now, so we do a little less, and she has the time and the knowledge to move odd items to the right place.

We're pretty tidy anyway, so it's the equivalent of 10 or so small items as she goes along (most of which would have to be put somewhere in her way anyway).

Mrscog · 19/07/2019 10:50

Yes, I tidy and I also give the loos a quick clean - my Ds's are still young and are prone to weeing over the seat and leaving skid marks - so I do my best to check that loos are flushed and at least visibly free of excretions!

gamerchick · 19/07/2019 10:52

Well yeah they're not there to tidy up. It's nice if you have one that doesn't mind but they're there to clean, not pick up after you

Whoopstheregomyinsides · 19/07/2019 11:21

Yes always but it’s a tip here and would be shameful if I didn’t

mogtheexcellent · 19/07/2019 11:28

I use the cleaner visit as a trigger to make sure all things are in their correct place and to change the sheets and towels. We also empty our bins and make sure the floor and work surfaces are clear.

We have cleaners once a fortnight and it takes about half an hour for my husband and i doing a mad dash round the house.

MammaMia19 · 19/07/2019 11:30

I agree. Tidy up/put things away because they are paid to clean not tidy!

avocadotofu · 19/07/2019 13:16

We always tidy up when our cleaner comes.

SparkyBlue · 19/07/2019 16:14

I always tidy up and I make sure the dc tidy away their stuff before the cleaner comes.

TheSandgroper · 19/07/2019 16:25

I grew up with a cleaning lady. We were drilled that cleaning ladies are not maids and we were to respect the difference.

A tidy house was presented and, in our rooms, anything under the bed had to be on it.

SilverySurfer · 19/07/2019 17:02

Tell your DH the clue is in the name. They are there to clean, not tidy. I always tidy before mine comes.

coconuttelegraph · 19/07/2019 17:07

Of course you aren't unreasonable to do what you want in your own home that has zero downside, if you're happy to tidy up, crack on

pasbeaucoupdegendarme · 19/07/2019 17:14

We do. And if we don’t then the floor isn’t properly hoovered or things are randomly hidden so things “look” tidy - eg today I was in a hurry and left washing up on the draining rack. I’d have been happy with it left there but the cleaner put it away... all in one drawer which happened to be empty as the mugs were in the dishwasher! It’s actually quite annoying!

Orangesandlemons82 · 19/07/2019 17:18

I always have a good tidy up before the cleaner comes. Then her time is actually spent cleaning. Although, also I would feel embarrassed if she saw how the house ends up some days!
