Wibu to ask for a temporary reduction in rent over this?

I live in a shared house with a water supply fed by a spring with a tank that refills - I'm not 100% on the details but basically it's not on the mains. My bills are all included in my rent.

The last couple weeks we have been having trouble with the water where it would cut out and no water available from the taps anywhere on the site. This was maybe once a week but now it has increased to several times a day - to the extent where I'm having to fill 2 litre bottles of water when it's working and stockpile them in my room just so I have something to drink/wash/brush my teeth with.

It's becoming really annoying and inconvenient, especially with the hot weather but I'm not sure if aibu to ask for a rent reduction until the problem is fixed? My LL's are aware of the problem and seem to be trying to fix it but it's getting worse not better!

Don’t think you can ask for a reduction in your rent when the landlord knows about the problem and is trying to fix it.

AwdBovril · 18/07/2019 20:06

YANBU to ask. They could refuse though. Landlords hold pretty much all the cards, it seems. Maybe contact the CAB if it's continuing with no sign of a definite resolution in sight.

Given they’re trying to fix it I think it’s a bit off to ask for a rent discount. It’s not like they’ve not fixed it on purpose.

ComfortInThePanic · 18/07/2019 20:07

If LL is trying to fix it then you can’t withhold rent

MagicMojito · 18/07/2019 20:10

That's terrible OP, I think the most basic thing you can ask for from a landlord is a safe building and clean running water. I'd absolutely ask.

ChiefSpoon · 18/07/2019 20:31

I think a supply of bottled water for the tenants would be a reasonable suggestion. I doubt you'll get a rent reduction though!

herculepoirot2 · 18/07/2019 20:37

They are trying to fix it, but in the meantime are not providing the most basic of services to you. I would ask.

Sharkirasharkira · 31/07/2019 10:55

Well they are sort of trying to fix it - basically waiting for the guy who has the tank on his property to get back from holiday and then they'll do something about it I guess.

Just so fucking annoying. Tried to have a shower last night. Water, but freezing cold, which I used to refill my bottles. Need to leave for work in a minute. No water. I really need to wash my hair but it's really long and I can't wash it with just a 2ltr bottle.

To add insult to injury my LL is now threatening to give me notice if I can't pay a month's rent upfront in advance by next week (I pay weekly as I get paid weekly, this has been discussed before and agreed to by them, I haven't been paying in advance for various reasons which I won't go into here, just week to week).

I get NMW, have no savings and no lines of credit. I can't just magically pull £500 out of my arse at a minutes notice but he doesn't give a shit. Whatever. At least make sure I have water while I'm here before you try and make me homeless! Now I'm filthy as well as being poor 😡😡
