To think that bread makes you, um, farty?

I've noticed this more recently. I just had some toast for dinner but have nearly lifted myself off the sofa! I'm sure it's a new thing, but it's like I can't contain myself.
AIBU to think bread could do this to me?

Could it be a gluten thing? My doctor told me to try cutting out gluten, and it made a huge difference in my intestinal upset.

Titsywoo · 17/07/2019 21:56

Probably. When I did a low carb diet a few years ago I stopped farting entirely.

MyFokMarelize · 17/07/2019 22:05

You are right OP. I've cut out bread for the last 4 weeks and I've barely farted since!

Unfortunately, I live in a communal environment and it's killing me! Need to summon up the willpower to ditch it...

Definitely if you're not used to it.

I'm not deliberately gluten free but I don't usually eat anything with gluten as a major ingredient. So when I do, I tend to get stomach cramps, wind and/or mild diarrhoea.

This may not be true but I read that the human gut wasn't originally designed to tolerate gluten and therefore we are all naturally slightly intolerant. Most of us have adapted to being able to eat it with no problems but, if you stop eating it for a prolonged period, that tolerance fades and it makes you feel awful.

DontCallMeShitley · 17/07/2019 22:17

If it is standard shop bought bread it probably contains chick pea or soya flour, chick pea flour can make you more than a bit windy.

Cost cutting and hoping people don't notice.

You need to find different bread, maybe sourdough, but read the ingredients and don't buy the unwrapped stuff because you never know what is in it parp!

HypatiaCade · 17/07/2019 22:18

Try a sourdough bread instead?

itwasadarkandstormy · 17/07/2019 22:23

It's both shop bought and bread I make. Shameful. I'm so disappointed!

Have you thought about what you put on it? Other things you eat?

itwasadarkandstormy · 20/07/2019 09:28

I thought it might be the yeast rather than the gluten. It's definitely not the topping!

Definitely
Cheap white bread is the worst culprit
something to do with the Chorley Wood method of baking the bread only half-proved. I read about it somewhere.
It halves the baking time, but the bread continues to ferment in the gut, hence the wind
I try never to eat white bread. Wholemeal bread isn't quite so bad, but no bread is better. Takes a bit of getting used to though because bread is now the staple food in the UK, outstripping potatoes, I believe

itwasadarkandstormy · 20/07/2019 12:06

It's toast really. There's very little substitute for that crunch!

Unfortunately I found exactly this as I approached the menopause. I bloody love toast. With Lurpak. And Marmite.

But, it makes me feel shit these days, so I've stopped eating it.

I do feel a whole lot better if that's any consolation Blush

itwasadarkandstormy · 20/07/2019 16:17

Interesting as I'm coming up toward menopause and it was never like this before
