AIBU to want revenge (dishonest seller)

I bought an item for my new baby via Facebook marketplace...we are struggling financially atm so I was happy to find this item second hand at reasonable price. Paid cash on collection. At home I proceeded to wash the washable bits of the said item, only then I realised that some crucial parts were missing. I messaged the seller and politely asked if he had these and could I collect them, he said he will look for them an let me know... and then I've heard nothing back, despite several messages he is totally blanking me...It's not much money (£50) but it's a large sum for me at the moment, and I feel so disappointed as the item is unusable without these bits...I know where he lives, obviously...would I be unreasonable to go back and ask for refund face to face? He probably won't even open the door if I do.. WWYD? I don't think there is any buyer protection as it was cash on collection...I'm kicking myself for being so trusting and not checking the item properly...I would like to get back to him somehow as he has knowingly conned me!

you really shouldn't buy a second hand car seat.....chalk it up to experience and get a cheaper one from mother care.

1hamwich4 · 17/07/2019 20:05

What kind of seat is it? I may be able to help...

bobstersmum · 17/07/2019 20:24

Unless he said it included the newborn insert and pads I don't think he's conned you? But to be honest £50 is a lot for a second hand car seat unless it is virtually unused and includes everything including the manual!

Ameliel · 17/07/2019 20:25

Thanks all, good points, and yes I feel like a right idiot.. it's a maxi cosi seat and came with the isofix base, so I thought it was a good deal... I have checked the base all over and it has no cracks or damage, the sellers son (he said) is only 2years old so I don't think the seat is very old. As PP said they have probably just chucked the pads etc..I know I should have bought a brand new one, but thought it was very unlikely that the seat would have been damaged, and I was trying to save some precious money! I'll go and speak to him (not expecting much) but yes I'll probably have to chalk it up...at least I have the isofix base now!

I work in a charity shop and we don't take car seats no matter the condition/what it looks like/what the owner says as there is no way of knowing. Even pristine seats could have been in a bump.

Timeless19 · 17/07/2019 20:38

I think the likelihood of it being in a car accident is very low. However, I personally don’t understand people who take a car seat on a plane the chance of it being chucked around baggage handling/ on and off the plane and being damaged is far more likely. But no one ever mentions that as being a concern! People upthread have concerns about car seats that go over speed bumps however....

I’m sorry but if the items you want him to provide weren’t in the photos then he is under no obligation to provide them. Car seats are sadly one of those things most people suck up as buying new.

chocolatesparkles · 17/07/2019 20:40

I used to fit car seats at work and second never buying a used seat. It can look brand new but you don't know it's history and if it had been involved in an accident. Did you check the maxi coding website to check that the isofix is suitable for your car? Just because you have isofix points doesn't mean all bases/seats are compatible with your car.

iano · 17/07/2019 20:42

Could you post on your local fb group to see if you can borrow the missing items? you only need the newborn insert for a matter of weeks. I have no idea if the pads on the strap are a safety issue. Are they?
Mind a new car seat would definitely be safer.
Tbh there is no way you could have bought the maxi cosi car seat and isofix for £100 new. The isofix alone costs £150.
I think if the isofix is working you've still done quite well out of this. They seem to go for £50 on eBay.

PervyMuskrat · 17/07/2019 20:43

You can get pad replacements easily enough on eBay for less than a fiver

brummiesue · 17/07/2019 20:47

If you want to save money buy second hand toys or clothes. Absolute madness to risk a second hand car seat - every recommendation going says not to do that!
For goodness sake, throw it away and buy a new one.

transformandriseup · 17/07/2019 20:52

Are you sure you can’t buy the missing parts on EBay. Or re-advertise the car seat but be honest about the missing bits. Then put the money towards a new one.

slashlover · 17/07/2019 20:55

People upthread have concerns about car seats that go over speed bumps however....

PP said 'low speed bumps' as in bumping the car at a low speed.

Chronicallymothering · 17/07/2019 20:56

I wouldn't use a secondhand car seat, especially as the person selling it to you has shown themselves to be dishonest. But you can buy spare parts from maxi cosi. I have had success with FB messaging them before.

CrunchTime0 · 17/07/2019 21:00

To be honest if you seen a picture and the bits were not included then I don’t see how you can moan.
It’s sold as seen and if the picture was advertised without those bits then they are not included. That’s your own fault and I wouldn’t be giving you a refund if it was me.

Also you should never buy car seats second hand so your better off binning it and buying a new one.

Aram1nta · 17/07/2019 21:13

Yeah, he's not in the wrong here at all - unless the photo accompanying the item listed for sale clearly showed the other bits? If it didn't then you've bought it 'sold as seen' so talk of getting revenge is rather misplaced - I wouldn't turn up on his doorstep either - again, what has he done wrong?

ilikefastcars · 17/07/2019 21:34

The isofix base was worth £50.
Throw the car seat out and buy a new one to use with the base. Tell dp you got a bargain on the base, don't mention the seat.
Never buy a second hand car seat x

fiydwi · 17/07/2019 21:46

You can buy those bits separately. I lost the back thing for my maxi cosi by the time my second was born so I got a new one off eBay, you can also buy the pads too xx

Waveysnail · 17/07/2019 23:23

OP u can get inserts to fit cheap on ebay.

pastyballbag · 17/07/2019 23:36

Did he specify it came with the inserts etc? What did the photo show? Surely it’s sold as seen and it’s on you to check that you’re buying what you need

glueandstick · 18/07/2019 01:11

I’ve got some pads if you want them? Binned the seat but kept the bits.

WomanLikeMeLM · 18/07/2019 01:19

You should of checked everything over before handing the money over. Report to FB, but this is your responsibility no one else's.

1hamwich4 · 18/07/2019 06:19

What model is it OP?

SallyOMalley · 18/07/2019 06:27

I agree with what others have said about second hand carseats (ie not recommended). However, you can buy generic strap pads on ebay - we did that after a particularly 'explosive' car journey! Not sure about the baby pad / head cushion bit, but it's worth a look?

LonelyBones · 18/07/2019 09:24

It really gets my goat when ebay/facebook sellers are dishonest, especially when its collection only and they lie to your face! People buy preloved for one reason, and thats because they cant afford new/full price.

We bought a cot for a pram from someone and asked if it was faulty/rips/stains etc, she said no. We took it home and it was broken beyond use. We werent to know to check at the time as the item is new to us, so didnt know how it worked etc. Its all god and well saying, check when the item at the time, but sometimes you arent aware until you get home. There is a certain level of honesty needed.

But as others have said, keep the iso fix base and buy a brand new car seat. Your baby's safety is paramount.
