To want to buy a Merrythought bear for my son

I think I am. I had one when I was a baby and he was my best friend when I was a child. I slept with him until I was a teenager and brought him on every trip we went on as a family. (Even now, I am referring to this bear as him.) They are crazy expensive and I'm not sure how I can justify the cost. I live in Canada and they don't even sell them here so I would have to order it and have it shipped from the UK. I could get him something else, but I am so sentimental about my own bear and I want the same experience my son. Tell me IABU.

Well... it depends really how easily you can afford it - and how upset you would be, having bought it, if it doesn't become special to your son.

recrudescence · 17/07/2019 18:30

How much do they cost?

BigBairyHollocks · 17/07/2019 18:30

If it means that much to you, just safe until
You can comfortably afford it and then buy it.

AlbusPercival · 17/07/2019 18:30

Umm my son has one. He loves it. Sorry that doesn’t help!

BigBairyHollocks · 17/07/2019 18:30

Save,not safe.

jomaIone · 17/07/2019 18:31

Kids find their own special thing, so it might not even be worth your money. My baby loves an old pillow case and a thin blanket from a doll play set 😀

ohcanada · 17/07/2019 18:32

If you could potentially afford to buy it twice, then you can afford it. Why not? Could you maybe leave for a special occasion or is he too old to request it?

WorraLiberty · 17/07/2019 18:32

Has your child stated they want one?

BiscuitDrama · 17/07/2019 18:33

Are they soft? My DD was given a lovely traditional jointed bear but the fur just wasn’t very soft and she never really liked it as a result.

Amicompletelyinsane · 17/07/2019 18:33

My child got a steiff bear. Never loved it. Loved a random second hand soft toy doll. You just can't force the way they choose something so I probably wouldn't spent the money

jomaIone · 17/07/2019 18:36

Sorry posted too soon. What I wanted her to have as her special thing was a white company elephant comforter that I slept with from 20 weeks! She has never looked at it. Still wont.

YesItsMeIDontCare · 17/07/2019 18:36

I bought DS a beautiful bear - never even looked at the bloody thing.

If it means a lot to you, you are more than welcome to buy me one.

"Banbury" please.

Skyejuly · 17/07/2019 18:37

All mine have jellycat toys and all love them even the teens still have them

bellabasset · 17/07/2019 18:37

The alternative for a bear for a baby is the Steiff cosy year bear, suitable from birth. I buy mine boxed from World of Bears for around £40 boxed.

They have the year embroidered on the foot. They have lovely baby toys

Nat6999 · 17/07/2019 18:38

My ds had a M & S bear, he is 15 now & the bear still looks like brand new, even though he has been in the washer several times. His comfort toy is a keel toys Bassett Hound who looks well loved due to been taken out & slept with since ds was 5.

FannyFeatures · 17/07/2019 18:41

If you can afford it and you won't be overly bothered if your DS doesn't love it then go for it.

You can't really predict or dictate what will become special to them, my eldest had a crochet blanket that he adored and my youngest never really got overly attached to anything which was actually easier because I had to make sure #1 never lost/dirtied or broke the bloody blanket and no suitable replacement could be found when it did... Even the one crocheted by the same person in the same colours wasn't his!

NeverGotMyPuppy · 17/07/2019 18:41

We bought our DS a Steiff teddy for his first Christmas. Cost about £170 IIRC - he wont cuddle it, it isnt squishy or soft but it will forever be his first Christmas present. We have dressed him in the cardigan we bought DS home in.

Hahaha88 · 17/07/2019 18:44

I said yanbu in the vote because I think it's a lovely idea for your child to have the same bear as you did. Then I googled them and decided they aren't very nice especially for their money. But if you really want to then go for it, but most likely they won't even like it as you know what sods laws like

Dogdogcat · 17/07/2019 18:49

DS is 14 months so this is all about me. With exchange and shipping it would be close to $300, it would be a stretch. The bears aren't soft which is part of what I love about my bear. I would give DS mine, but it is was very well loved and is really fragile. I think I probably have to let this go.

Where is your bear? Can’t you share him?

barryfromclareisfit · 17/07/2019 18:50

Myself, daughter and granddaughter all had Merrythought bears. It mattered more to me than to them.

Coffeeonthesofa · 17/07/2019 18:51

Cross post with OP

steff13 · 17/07/2019 18:51

I'd never heard of them. I googled, and they don't look very soft, and there are cuter bears available. I think you could probably find something local to you that he would love just as much as you loved your bear.

NeverGotMyPuppy · 17/07/2019 18:52

I guess the question is - can you afford it? If you can then I say go for it!
