To think £150+ is very expensive for highlights and a trim?

I've been a bottle blonde for years and started letting my roots grow out last year to give my hair a break. I've got quite a bit of regrowth now and wanted it all done properly, as opposed to doing it myself at home as I'm used to.

I went to a well known salon today for a consultation with a senior stylist who has a great reputation and i was quoted £140 (minimum) For the highlights and then an additional £20+ for a small trim.

She recommended I opt in for conditioning treatment too but I can't afford that.

I paid the £50 deposit for the highlights and booked in because I really want it done, I've had a shit time of it this year battling depression and PTSD so i wanted to treat myself for once and feel like the "old me" again.

Now I'm home and the excitement has worn off I'm feeling quite uncomfortable about the cost. I'm not well off, I can afford to have it done as a one off but if that's the price I'll have to pay every 6-8 weeks there's no way I could continue to go there.

AIBU to think this is bloody extortionate?

@Boneshere because I can only really afford the colour and plan on telling her this when I go

I don't want a big scene and if that's what's going to happen they might aswell keep the deposit and I'll save myself the other £100 Sad

@Mischone I’m wondering that too?

Seriously though only pay for something that’s going to be easy to keep up with or you can afford to keep doing. Paying £140 for something that will last 6 weeks, is about £25 per week, without all the added extras like drying. (For what it’s worth your be looking at paying £60-£80 here in Wales)

Mischone · 19/07/2019 12:04

My DF is offering to give me the £56 for the cut and finish because he thinks they will end up calling the police if I tell them I'm refusing the cut and finish because "its all part of it" Blush

Maybe he has a point with his logic? Disgusting practise though IMO.

Hairdresser here 🙋🏻‍♀️
The clarify your question before, a full head of highlights would involve foils throughout your whole head. To get the look of the pics you attached, it would be fine foils, you'd need a low light adding in as well for some definition. Then a root smudge and toner. I can easily see it being the price you've been quoted, especially in that location and Toni and guy. Our salon would charge approx £120 for that and we are way oop north Grin

nevernotstruggling · 19/07/2019 12:22

I've just paid this for the same but it included the olaplex

HJWT · 19/07/2019 12:25

For london id say thats cheap! For a decent hair stylist in a salon!!

I live up north (lancashire) and pay £145 for balayage and a cut!

Mischone · 19/07/2019 12:27

Would everything you've listed be classed as "balayage" as that's one of the only two options she gave me? And could you shed any light on this theory of hairdressers not letting you leave the premesis without having a cut and finish Blush

Oops sorry forgot to tag you into my last comment @crazycatbaby

@Mischone that is a load of rubbish! If you had a cut last week why would you need another because you had your hair coloured?

Just go in say you want a balayage and thats it, if they ask why you don't want a cut anymore just say the lady you usually go to for a cut was booked up but shes managed to fit you in now. You need to ring them though because they will shorten the app time.

browzingss · 19/07/2019 13:20

I don’t think salons enforce that, they may just offer for a junior to give you a rough dry (with a lower charge/free) or let you walk out with wet hair.

I’m pretty sure T&G include blow drys in their colour services. They don’t force you to get a cut at all.

crazycatbaby · 19/07/2019 13:22

@Mischone it's the look of balayage but not really the process, with what your hair is already like. They'll need to break up the line of demarcation with blonde, probably in foils. Technically balayage is a technique, freehand painting on the hair using a clay based bleach (which hardens on the outside but stays moist Envyon the inside to ensure the lift. But it won't lift as light as what your hair already is, which is why I would do foils)

crazycatbaby · 19/07/2019 13:24

Oh sorry @Mischone , we charge £14 for a blow dry as we want to check the colour is ok before you leave. Nobody has so far asked to leave wet but if they did I would knock that off but they would have no comeback if the colour isn't perfect as I won't have seen it before they have left. If that makes sense?

Mischone · 19/07/2019 19:00

Ah that makes perfect sense, so it's because the stylist wants to make sure the colour looks right. I thought it was just a way of squeezing more money out of the customer Grin

Hopefully the PP who said the blow dry is included is right Smile

All over blonde colour with lavender meshes plus cut, last week I paid £48. My hairdresser rents a chair, comes in early to fit me in, and I'd follow her anywhere.

Mischone · 20/07/2019 17:48

Right done, what do we think?

I opted out of the cut as they would've charged me the full £56 even though I only wanted a trim, so I'm going to my usual place for that on Monday.

I paid just under £150 In total.

Personally I'm very pleased with it, I can't believe I was walking around with those bloody roots Blush

Gorgeous, OP!

VBT2 · 20/07/2019 18:38

Looks great OP - what a transformation!

Caucho · 20/07/2019 19:22

Christ as man this like stepping into some parallel universe. The places near where I work can be expensive but I just get mine done at the local Turkish barbers for £8 and pay then a tenner to be nice. Having said that there is no dye or blow drying involved and it takes around 10-15 mins rather 3 hours.

IcaMorgan · 20/07/2019 19:47

For cheaper highlights try Gossip Sisters by Lee station. They do a deal tue-thurs.
