To change my baby's formula?

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 15:37

DS has been on C&G first infant milk since birth.

But recently he's started to be sick after every feed and he doesn't seem to be satisfied after his feed, he wants more and more all the time.

Would I be U to change it? I don't know what to do!

How old is he? The heavier food causes havoc with the bowel.
How long is he on the formula.
Would he be lactose intolerant, AFAIK You can get lactose free formula.

MmeBufo · 17/07/2019 15:44

How old is he? TBH I'd be paying a visit to the GP about the vomiting etc before changing anything.

EmeraldShamrock · 17/07/2019 15:46

Yes visit the GP first.

JennyBlueWren · 17/07/2019 15:57

I see nothing wrong with switching formula. We only used it after 6 months and bought whatever was on offer.

However if baby wasn't sick before but now is I wouldn't think it was down to the formula. Phone Health Visitor or GP (whichever is easiest/gets best response in your area).

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 15:58

Thanks everyone. He's 11 weeks old. I find that he's sick when he doesn't part with his wind as good as usual but he's been on gripe water for a while and that helps a lot.

Recently he's just not satisfied with his feed, I'm sure he would have more if I gave it to him but I don't want to overfeed him

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 15:59

I wouldn't say every feed as I said in my OP. I've just given him one and it took quite a bit of winding to get something up but he hasn't been sick (yet). He fed at 1pm and finished the bottle and was crying for more at half 3 and he drained the entire bottle.

So confused I just don't know what to do. He's very fussy after feeding these days

OP posts:
Waveysnail · 17/07/2019 16:01

Could he be wanting to suck rather than actually feed.

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 16:06

@Waveysnail I give him his dummy but he spits it out Sad

dementedpixie · 17/07/2019 16:09

How much is he taking in each feed? If he is finishing each bottle then I'd add an extra ounce to them

Liland · 17/07/2019 16:26

Politely meant, you won't be over feeding an 11 week old. 2.5 hours between bottles is fine! My 6 month old goes 3 hours and is still slim... Add an extra ounce as another poster said to help fill him up! Ignore the pack guidelines, some babies need more, especially during growth spurts and leaps.

The sick - this may suggest an issue, some babies develop reflux around 12 weeks I think? Try some new winding positions if you're having issues with that, there's a fair few.

Why1990 · 17/07/2019 17:13

We switched to cow and gate comfort last Thursday. It's easier to digest so ds burps, farts and poops easier. We have a much happier baby now.

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 17:15

@dementedpixie 7oz. Do you think I should increase?

OP posts:
jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 17:15

@Liland thank you I will try and see how we get on Smile

Infacol before every feed and switch to aptimal.

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 17:27

Has anybody tried Aldi's Mamia infant formula? This is made in the same factory as Aptamil and is almost half the price. I'd be interested in trying it

Lolapusht · 17/07/2019 17:28

Do you do paced bottle feeding? All formulas have to (legally) have the same ingredients so there’s not much difference between them. If it’s reflux, then plenty of winding (best position for mine was sitting on my knee, one hand on his chest, other on his chest then gently raising him until he burped. His reflux arrived around 6 weeks and went around 14 weeks).

If it’s reflux, plenty of advice online on things you can try before going to GP (holding upright for 20 mins after a feed, putting a wedge under the mattress when he sleeps etc). If it he doesn’t get better then GP can prescribe various things (Gaviscon (gave mins really bad constipation and didn’t help reflux), Ranitidine or Omeprizole. As others have said, 2 hours is ok between feeds at that age. They usually have a growth spurt around 12 weeks so he could just need more.

Trafalger · 17/07/2019 17:30

We found HIPP organic milk to be amazing. Our child had severe silent reflux and hipp did really help. C&G didnt work on my youngest but my eldest loved it.

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 17:47

@Lolapusht I try to give him a break in between but he cries when I take the milk away 😫

Blgb · 17/07/2019 17:52

I literally could write this post myself! My LO is 12 weeks and exactly the same draining a bottle and wanting more very soon after. He's not sick very often but does take a lot of winding sometimes. I switched to hungry baby a few weeks back and that seemed to fill him longer for a while but now I feel like I'm back at square one 😂

jaseyraex · 17/07/2019 17:58

Definitely see the GP or speak to health visitor about the sickness. You want to get to the bottom of that, they might give some gaviscon or ranitidine if it is reflux. But it could be an intolerance to cows milk or lactose and you'd need a different milk for that.

jonesyyy · 17/07/2019 18:05

Thanks all, I'll book in at the GP to get to the bottom of the sickness!

Liland · 17/07/2019 18:23

7oz with no burp - I'm not surprised it's coming back up often! Is it the entire feed, or just half the milk? I think you'll have to bite the bullet and withstand the cries to wind him halfway through, can you distract with music, tv, or your face maybe?

Dairy allergy would have most likely been apparent to you much earlier (my LO has cmpa and reflux). It's actually quite hard in many places to get reflux meds, many gps aren't confident in prescribing them to infants, or even believe there's a problem. If sick is the only symptom, I'd be surprised if it is reflux tbh.

For what it's worth, 7oz is a lot of milk at 11 weeks (nothing wrong with that - chunky is better than skinny in babies, and some have higher metabolism than others!). Your LO belly is probably full to the brim though, which could be uncomfortable. Can you feed slightly less more often, would baby go for that?

RockyRolly · 17/07/2019 22:52

OP please try infacol before going down the gaviscon/reflux route.

TheHandsOfNeilBuchanan · 17/07/2019 23:32

DS is seven months and a hungry little fellow, he only has 8oz 4 times a day of expressed BM or formula (if I'm not there to bf). I ignored the add an extra ounce thing. DS has always drained every feed we've ever given him and is now the same with food, I increased his milk when he was little as HV said if he drains it give more, he still drained it and then was sick. We used to combi feed with aptamil and it made him very very windy and he'd want to suck more or bf to pass wind. We switched to Hipp organic (gradually phased from one to the other) and it has been excellent
