In the local paper: a woman splashed a tiny drop of Oven Pride on her arm and needed skin grafts after it ate away her flesh. I actually had some of this in the cupboard! It’s now in the bin. AIBU to think it shouldn’t be on sale if it’s so highly corrosive?

apostrophe (?)

missyB1 · 17/07/2019 13:36

I won’t use it simply because it ruins ovens. When you have a professional oven cleaner you will notice they don’t use caustic cleaning products, and if you ask why they will tell you how bad those are for your ovens. Ok it’s hard to buy good non caustic cleaner but does your oven need to look show room clean all the time?

viques · 17/07/2019 13:41

Is it a good idea to throw a full bottle in the bin? Poor bin men . If it gets broken and they for some reason get it on them. Better to tip it down a drain and pour a few buckets of water after it to dilute it.

BarbaraofSeville · 17/07/2019 13:44

One of the best decisions I made was to buy a self cleaning oven. it cost just under £500 for a built in single oven with grill, but it's a decent make (AEG) so admittedly more expensive than a normal oven, but I'll never have to scrub it, use oven pride, or get an oven cleaning person in.

The last time I did that for the old oven it cost £80 it was absolutely disgustingly filthy so you'd only have to save the cost of a few professional cleans for the pyrolytic feature to pay for itself.

The only part it doesn't clean is the door glass, but that comes out and goes in the dishwasher.

Isatis · 17/07/2019 13:44

But a skin graft from being accidentally splashed with a single drop is ridiculous. If it can cause that level of damage it should be banned

But it's obvious that it wasn't a single drop. The report itself says that the incident arose when Ms Stott removed the oven racks from the plastic bag and some of it brushed against her skin. You can also see from the injury itself that it must have been more extensive contact than that.

What is odd is that she's a self-employed cleaner: surely she must have been familiar with the products she was using? Or was it a case of familiarity breeding contempt?

RollOnSummerBreak · 17/07/2019 13:47

That had to of been a fair amount on her skin to cause that.
I've had splashes and even when rinsed it left which would look like very small fag burns. BUT that was due to me. Being careless and rushing.

I now have it steamed £20 a time and he does the top oven/grill too for free as it's rarely used only for cheese on toast much easier and quicker especially with dd around

Puzzledandpissedoff · 17/07/2019 13:49

I really don't see how someone could get such serious burns from it. You would feel a missed splash stinging, rinse and treat

You'd think so wouldn't you? Even someone stupid enough to ignore the warnings plastered over the box would surely think "hang on, this is a bit sore - what's happened?" and do something about it, which is why I wonder about a deliberate compo claim

I agree with PPs, though, that at this rate we'll soon be unable to buy anything that works Hmm

happybunny007 · 17/07/2019 13:55

BE CAREFUL OF SHARP KNIVES PEOPLE!!!!

BarbaraofSeville · 17/07/2019 13:57

I worked with quite strong, but not as strong as oven pride, sodium hydroxide solution when I was young and stupid and didn't always bother to put a lab coat on.

I can confirm that even tiny, invisible to the naked eye, splashes do sting. It also eats though clothes and I had a few long sleeved tops with tiny holes in the sleeves.

Thankfully no serious injuries and I did always wear safety glasses as I heeded the warning from my boss's rather stern safety briefing that if I got any in my eye, then I would be taken to hospital.

BiBiBirdie · 17/07/2019 13:58

Awful stuff.
Anything that is so potent that you're told to wear gloves and open windows is too much.
Most of these cleaners are totally unnecessary, if you clean regularly you can use a paste of bicarb and water. Leave it overnight, spray on some lemon juice and wipe it away.

pinklupin · 17/07/2019 14:01

Yuck, evil stuff! Boggles me that anyone would put something as toxic as that in the same place they put food. Same people that think it's disgusting to wash knickers and tea towels together?

PineappleSeahorse · 17/07/2019 14:02

The same place they put food? You mean under the sink?

PineappleSeahorse · 17/07/2019 14:02

I don't put food under the sink.

twattymctwatterson · 17/07/2019 14:08

I'm sorry but this woman is an idiot. She's obviously not paid the slightest attention to the instructions, got a huge amount of a caustic product on her skin and didn't rinse it off immediately.

For the benefit of doubt, you also shouldn't drink domestos.

MagicMojito · 17/07/2019 14:10

Well I feel like an idiot after reading this thread, I've always used it with bare hands (always forget to buy rubber gloves and only do big jobs like the oven when "the urge" hits and I've got to do it right now this minute. Only ever suffered light tingling sensation) Blush

Stupid as I seem now, I still wouldn't ban it just because idiots like me can't be trusted to use it correctly.

PineappleSeahorse · 17/07/2019 14:12

With bare hands? WTF? You have been so lucky. Doesn't the pack contain gloves though even if they aren't always the best? Every Oven Cleaner that I've used did.

floribunda18 · 17/07/2019 14:16

Of course it's bloody dangerous, it's caustic stuff.

What will she do for an encore, drink bleach?

Stupid cow.

MagicMojito · 17/07/2019 14:18

Yes, total idiot (me). Feeling really stupid now. Almost all cleaning things say to wear gloves as a precaution, I believed most was just to idiot proof the product. The irony eh!

Been really lucky, maybe my skin is just super tough after years of irresponsible behaviour Blush

MagicMojito · 17/07/2019 14:19

It's insane as I'm known as a worrier and am actually really anxious about safety.......

Triskaidekaphilia · 17/07/2019 14:26

The same place they put food? You mean under the sink?
Think they meant in the oven Grin

I got a splash in my eye once, it was terrifying! But no damage done in the end.

1DoesNotSimplyWalkIntoMordor · 17/07/2019 14:27

When I worked for a cleaning company cleaning industrial kitchens we were provided with extra thick rubber gauntlets (elbow length) protective goggles, face masks, overalls, boots and rubber aprons. If we were caught not wearing any of the listed items whilst using any corrosive chemicals it would have led to immediate dismissal from that particular job, a meeting with the boss and disciplinary action, if you were caught a second time you lost your job, that was a long time ago and way before the Mr Muscle incidents made the headlines. It was the same when we used any corrosive chemicals. I still use caustic soda (don't work in industrial cleaning anymore) and I still use gauntlets, goggles and face mask when cleaning my own oven. It is easy to become complacent and have accidents with these chemicals.

Singlebutmarried · 17/07/2019 14:29

We’ve invested in an oven with pyroclastic (sp?) cleaning.

It’s ace.

Turn it on and the crud bakes off.

For the little oven I use the Koh cleaner that keeps popping up on FB. No nasties, no burnies and it works.

Paramicha · 17/07/2019 14:33

People don't read the instructions. They are there, and say how powerful the product is.
We just clean ours after cooking, it never gets dirty then and if it does a normal cleaner will get rid of it.

Triskaidekaphilia · 17/07/2019 14:34

@Singlebutmarried I've had my oven for 2 years and haven't figured out how to use that function yet (manual explains what it does but not how to start it) Blush

Jellybeansincognito · 17/07/2019 14:41

Yanbu being unreasonable for making people aware but Yabu for not knowing already.

This is why the Instagram cleaning queen (lol!) gets on my nerves, she has made people dangerously use chemicals. I even saw someone spraying a stainless steel cleaner which was an irritant all over her child’s bedding 😐. People are daft.
