I have a cleaning business, and I'm about to hire a few cleaners. I was thinking of doing the interview in their own homes, instead of in a coffee shop? I've read that the franchise Maid2clean does this. To be honest, I'm scared they're going to think I'm weird or something like that. But on the other hand, I can see why interviewing them in their home would be beneficial, to sort of see how clean they are? What do you think?

Absolutely not. Way too intrusive

There are other ways of checking that they genuinely live at the address.

stupidis · 17/07/2019 11:21

Thank god you're not a proctologist looking to hire consultants

lottiegarbanzo · 17/07/2019 11:29

No way. Personal and professional lives are separate.

Did Enid Blyton's children spend their summer holidays enjoying free-range adventures in island castles? No?!

A practical interview element, asking them to demonstrate their cleaning techniques, might be relevant.

transformandriseup · 17/07/2019 11:30

Your cleaners will most likely have homes kept in a reasonable state in spite of them working.

Exactly like your clients!!

Times10 · 17/07/2019 11:32

There was a couple of episodes of how clean is your house, where the person needing help was actually a cleaner in their job, so I wouldn’t say it’s a foolproof idea.

ThePhoenixRises · 17/07/2019 11:34

Interview at coffee shop, then offer a trial session, using your own home or someone else home and see how well they clean that.

You could offer customers a discount for using there home as a trial home as a one off.

Pay the cleaners a fixed rate for the trial clean and use that to see how long they take to do what's asked.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 17/07/2019 11:36

I was thinking of doing the interview in their own homes

no, just no.

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 11:38

It's intrusive and what if they share/live with parents or are in cheap rented accommodation? Cleaners aren't well paid so all of the above are likely. Stick with the coffee shop

Double0FeckingBollocks · 17/07/2019 11:40

I've just looked up the Maid2Clean website and you're right they do say they " inspect" their cleaners ability at home. I would never use a firm that used such discriminatory and intrusive practices.

You can't invite yourself to their house to do their interview, that's total CF territory.

Beside, if they are cleaning other people's houses all the time when do they have time to do their own?

AhoyDelBoy · 17/07/2019 11:56

One of the stupidest ideas I’ve ever seen on here! ShockConfused

Lilyannarose · 17/07/2019 11:57

They would feel you were judging their home (which if truth be told you would be). I would find it intrusive to be honest.

HeadintheiClouds · 17/07/2019 11:59

Haha, no one in their right mind will apply. Daft notion.

viques · 17/07/2019 12:04

howwudyoufeel

Eddie Stobert died prematurely, bankrupt and with huge personal debts! perhaps not a good example for the OP. Smile

ChrisPrattsFace · 17/07/2019 12:06

There is a line between work and home life for many people so I don’t think it would be appropriate at all.
Also, I LOVE cleaning other people’s houses and my work but not so keen on my own house 😂 ... so you wouldn’t get anything accurate from snooping on me!

cantfindname · 17/07/2019 12:06

I used to clean and had loads of word-of-mouth customers. However I would have lost every one if they saw my home! it's like the cobblers children, your own place comes last if at all.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 17/07/2019 12:06

I wouldn't expect a Michelin Star chef to serve Michelin-rated diner to his family every day either...

At most, you can invite to the interview in a cafe will all the details, and add that if they prefer it in their own home, you are flexible. See how many people take your offer - it wouldn't work for me either, I need to see that candidates have childcare sorted!

Chune · 17/07/2019 12:07

Fuck that for a game of soldiers. And I wouldn’t knowingly employ any business that operated that way.

EleanorOalike · 17/07/2019 12:16

I’d think you had a boundaries issue and that you’d be a nightmare to work for. Some employers thing they own their staff but, as immaculate as my home is, my home life and my work are separate and my family and I have every right to privacy. You’ve basically admitted you’d only be doing it to snoop. I’d turn down any interview with a company who wanted to do home interviews.

MrsGrammaticus · 17/07/2019 12:18

Goodness how intrusive. I can't believe you're seriously contemplating doing this. Dreadful fgs come to your senses and put your brain in gear. You've no right to pry into anyone's private life!

daisypond · 17/07/2019 12:19

No, don’t do this. I know a couple of cleaners - one is in a house share in a rented house, and the other lives with her parents.

Maid2Interview · 17/07/2019 12:24

I won't be doing it, will just stick to doing the interview at Costa. Just come on here to hear your views on this, since a big cleaning company like Maid2clean is doing it.

MrsGrammaticus · 17/07/2019 12:36

I have 2 teens who walk about half dressed, a crazy dog, a tropical fish which wallows in its own murk, a fridge full of out of date food and a DH which works from home. I think we're pretty normal.....but what would the 'hotel inspector' think of us.....? Maids2go ought to be ashamed of themselves. I hope they read this thread and change their ways. The firms names sounds sexists....maids ffs.

ReanimatedSGB · 17/07/2019 12:36

Maid2Clean probably has other shitty business practices, like underpaying and overworking staff, to account for its 'success'. It's not unreasonable to ask a potential employee for proof of address and even right to work in the UK, but you don't have to go to their home to do such checks.
