To have never dry cleaned a duvet

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/07/2019 09:03

My DD was shocked to learn that I have never done this - it’s just not on my radar. Do other people do this?

I do throw out pillows from time to time.

I throw them away from time to time. Have never dry cleaned them

PineappleSeahorse · 17/07/2019 09:07

I wash my duvets in my machine.

Babdoc · 17/07/2019 09:10

The kids single ones fitted in my washing machine, so I washed them as necessary (eg if they’d been sick). My double gets hung up to air from time to time, and I switch between a winter and summer one. After a few years I tend to get a new one - I really hate the smell of dry cleaning solvents and would feel sick having to sleep under a duvet smelling of them.

CitadelsofScience · 17/07/2019 09:13

My DSs goes in the machine because he's a bedwetter.

Ours and my DD's just get hung over the bannister to air periodically.

I'm just not taking it to be cleaned despite the fact we have a service down the road that does it. I'm not paying nearly £30 to have our feather duvet cleaned when a good airing is fine.

I've managed to get to my mid 50's and haven't had any catastrophic duvet related illnesses yet.

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 09:14

Mine is machine washable but doesn't fit in my machine, it's £8 to have it laundered locally. to be honest though, I just replace every couple of years because I don't buy expensive ones

Limensoda · 17/07/2019 09:15

No, never. It's probably minging.

Figmentofmyimagination · 17/07/2019 09:16

citadel she gave me a bit of a talking to about how much we sweat in the night etc but I am also 50+ with no duvet-related illnesses.

I have never dry cleaned a duvet. YANBU.

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 09:19

what is it with all the laundry threads atm?

fwiw I wash the duvets and pillows once a year after hay fever season.
just normal in the washer.

orangeshoebox · 17/07/2019 09:20

dry cleaning liquids are very toxic and bedding shouldn't be dry cleaned.

Gatehouse77 · 17/07/2019 09:21

I wash them roughly every 6 months or if they get swapped from 4 tog to 9 tog with temperature changes.
I have washed pillows but it usually screws them up. Even the so-called washable ones 🤬 So I tend to replace them when someone complains! DH and I have tempur ones with a cover so I wash them every 3-4 months.

Windygate · 17/07/2019 09:22

All our duvets say 'Do not dry clean' I wash them.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 17/07/2019 09:22

My MIL has owned a dry cleaning business for many, many years and has never dry cleaned a duvet. The smell of the chemicals retained in the fibres would be unbearable and probably dangerous. She has washed them though, often with half a capful of a bleach based product if they’re stained. They have to be dried carefully so there’s no damp spots left which can create mould or mildew (not sure which).

I’ve waited a long time for that useless information to be, well, less useless!! Grin

Wenttoseainasieve · 17/07/2019 09:23

I'd hate to sleep under a duvet full of toxic dry cleaning chemicals. I read a news article earlier about our massive exposure to toxic substances in modern life, those used in mattresses and bedding were particularly emphasised, so why maximise that!?

doodleygirl · 17/07/2019 09:25

I have my winter duvet washed at the launderette when I swap it to my summer duvet and visa versa. I do buy expensive duvets which last a long time. It is certainly worth getting them laundered. Costs aboout £18 for my superking.

MissRhubarb · 17/07/2019 09:25

Never dry cleaned one. The kids ones are small enough to fit in the machine. I always mean to take to big ones to the launderette but it hasn't happened yet and I'm 45. They get replaced every few years.

At least this cleaning thread was inspired by your daughter and not that frickin' "cleaning expert" from This Morning all the other ones have been triggered by.

WhenOneFacePalmDoesntCutIt · 17/07/2019 09:30

Mine don't fit in my washing machine, but are washed in a laundrette once a year before I put them away when I change from summer to winter duvet.

I don't like the smell of dry cleaned duvet, water and detergent works just as well. Normally take them home wet and dry them in the sun.

TheInebriati · 17/07/2019 09:42

I buy the cheap ones, they are cheaper to replace than clean. They get turned into pet beds.

MrsMcHooha · 17/07/2019 17:04

YANBU! I own a Dry Cleaning and Laundry Service and a duvet should, under no circumstances be dry cleaned. If the drying process hasn't been done properly, damp patches inside will emit toxic solvent fumes. Not only that, the best process for removing stains found on duvets is to launder them as dry cleaning won't do as good a job. Hanging your duvet outside on a sunny day can do wonders to air out your duvet and keep it smelling fresh Smile

TraffordTansy · 17/07/2019 17:08

I have taken a duvet to the dry cleaners but it was washed and dried in the big machines, not dry cleaned.

LilyR2019 · 17/07/2019 17:13

Agree with MrsMcHooha I did get mine dry cleaned & it was never the same again!...

Now they get a periodic clean at the launderette (when I have time) and that seems to keep them clean & fresh?...

Finfintytint · 17/07/2019 17:21

In my fifties and have never laundered them ( do you mean Continental Quilt? Lol). They get aired every now and then outside and changed regularly.

DontCallMeShitley · 17/07/2019 17:22

I bought a large drum washing machine so I could wash ours. Much better than dry cleaning chemicals up your nose at night.
