School report not given yet

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/07/2019 19:25

We break off on Friday. No sign of a school report yet, possibly to be given tomorrow, giving just one day and a half for any comments, asking for clarification etc.

While I don't expect any surprises in DD's report AIBU to think that this is cutting it really close if parents need to discuss anything, especially ones that have children in wrap around care so they might not even be able to see it straight away or see the teacher at drop off/pick up?

Written reports are pretty much meaningless. I hate writing them because they don't get read by a lot of parents, and the information on them isn't much more than what the parents already know.

At Secondary we send home a data report, with end of year grades on, during the last week.

GrasswillbeGreener · 16/07/2019 20:05

I can offer one worse - online report made available 1 week after the end of term for my youngest. We had had regular grades and a couple of reports earlier in the year though. (Independent school).

His previous school the reports were sent home on Wednesday when they broke up Friday. Eventually I started remembering to ask for them before the weekend ...

BelleSausage · 16/07/2019 20:05

Actually, I missed some steps in that cycle. It goes like this:

Teach
1st mark up in book (5/6 hours)
Teach
2nd mark up in book (5/6 hours)
Teach
Assess
Final mark (5/6 hours)
Moderate (got to all be at a standard)
Data entry for data drop
Report (full report- 3 hours per teaching group per subject, short report- 45 mins per teaching group per subject, Parents Eve- 3 hours per year group)

And repeat every term all year.

herculepoirot2 · 16/07/2019 20:06

We all have to manage our workload and time and meet deadlines at work. We all have a calendar and weeks/months thay are busier it's hardly unique to teachers.

And the teachers will have met their deadline. If this is an issue, it’s an issue at the level of SLT and the HT, not the class teacher.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/07/2019 20:07

Every time you get a data update on your child that is the amount of work that has gone into providing you with that data.

Parents eve in November, parents eve in February and end of year school report. That's all we get . DD is primary. I don't know if I'm reading it wrong but your post makes it sound like there should be more ?

I’m expecting DS’s in the last day of school. I suspect the school do not want to answer questions about the reports. I also expect it to be completely unenlightening (and, frankly, wouldn’t ask any questions anyway because talking to his school appears to get you precisely nowhere).

BelleSausage · 16/07/2019 20:08

I have to add that is for every group I teach at secondary. I have seven groups this year. That’s 21 hours of report writing and 630 hours of marking each school year! I have never really added that up before. That is bonkers! Primary have to do that for every subject. I don’t envy them that!

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/07/2019 20:09

I hate writing them because they don't get read by a lot of parents,

I read them all, more than once even and have kept them all. Maybe I need a hobby.Grin

Which, of course, means that the school is wasting a great deal of teacher time. They should probably stop that entirely.

BelleSausage · 16/07/2019 20:11

@YourSarcasmIsDripping

We provide short reports every half term. So an attitude grade and a current attainment. But that is secondary and they are a bone of contention because we are often reporting just before an assessment. But the assessment calendar is so tight that they cannot be moved. Tis all madness!

herculepoirot2 · 16/07/2019 20:13

Data and reporting six times a year will shortly be a thing of the past. It’s a complete waste of time and contributing to the exodus of teachers from the profession.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/07/2019 20:18

Actually my school also provides a short report at the end of every term, with targets set for the next one. It's a pain in the butt I agree , and massively increases the workload in those weeks.

I really don't want this thread to turn into a teacher bashing thread. I just didn't really know what the norm was or whether there were any guidelines on this.

A teacher (from another school) that did a few weeks training in the school also mentioned sending reports this late was not quite right.

Her comments and the reports being really late(in my opinion) this year made me wonder what is common/good practice and what isn't.

School report always comes in the holidays xmas and summer. grade and attainment at different times. Parents evening in February, but you can ask to see a teacher if you have any particular concerns.

They are all e-mailed.

Barbie222 · 16/07/2019 20:25

I agree that's late. You could say as much on the feedback slip.

BelleSausage · 16/07/2019 20:26

@YourSarcasmIsDripping

It’s totally fair enough to ask. I don’t think it’s too late for the end of term one to go home in the last week not is supposed to be a round up. I do know schools that do the long written report for Easter rather than the end of term. That does seem to be more effective.

VenusTiger · 16/07/2019 20:28

My DS is 6 and got his report last Thursday - they finish this coming Friday

Lougle · 16/07/2019 21:00

DD3 got her report on Monday. She breaks up next Tuesday. DD2 will get her report on Friday, the day she breaks up. DD1 will get her report, I think, in Friday, when she also breaks up.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 16/07/2019 21:16

I'm happy to go with the majority, especially since I don't know what is the norm. IAMBU. Might use @Barbie222 's suggestion though and write on the slip that it would be nice to get them earlier.

Our school is a joke - they're giving out year 6 sats results with the school reports. No time to ask questions or comment or get a reply IMO, if the SATs results are not results we might except. Utterly ridiculous.
In 7 years it's never been the day before they close, but they've really gone down hill.
Our preschool has already given us their report.
Our other child's primary has given out their reports already.
My eldest's school looks shite by comparison, glad I didn't stick with this school for my other kids.

Which is kinda my point. They ought to just make the deadline a week or two earlier. I was replying to someone saying how much teachers have to do at the end of term suggesting that they put the deadline back for teachers to address this.

LolaSmiles · 16/07/2019 22:44

GreatOne
Y6 results are norm referenced against the national cohort and given as a scaled score. What do you want the school to say?

BernardsarenotalwaysSaints · 16/07/2019 22:44

It seems late to me, although judging by other comments on this thread it isn’t all that unusual. Ours were given out the week before last & parents evenings were held last week for those who wished to discuss anything in them. I found a lot of my school reports last year when emptying my Dad’s house & they were dated early July as well (both primary & secondary). We break up on Friday (inset day on Monday).

herculepoirot2 · 17/07/2019 03:24

They ought to just make the deadline a week or two earlier.

As others have pointed out, this will be the end of a long process. You set the deadline where you have to to make sure it gets done. I am sure they didn’t pull the date out of their bottoms.
