AIBU to be so disappointed with a wrong takeaway

So my DH and I have recently moved house - it’s been an absolutely knackering couple of weeks and I feel ready to drop.

My DH is out tonight so it’s my first evening on my own in the new house. I had a lovely evening planned of a takeaway and my favourite tv. I ordered a vegan pad thai from a restaurant I like (I am actually vegan - not trying to bang on about it as people think we do, but it’s relevant! Grin)

I settled down and started eating it, and I thought it tasted a bit ‘off’. On further examination I discovered it had been cooked with egg all the way through it!! I know pad thais traditionally are cooked with egg but this was specifically advertised as a vegan dish!

So now I’m out of pocket for a meal I can’t eat (I have requested a refund which hopefully will come through at some point, but right now I’m out of pocket) I feel very queasy in my stomach - I’ve been vegan for quite a while and the thought and taste of having eaten egg had really unsettled my stomach. And I feel like my lovely chilled night has been spoilt!

So AIBU to be so sad about just a wrong meal?

I remember ordering for a load of us, and everyone had some sort of prawn dish except me, as I don’t like prawns at all. Every dish, except mine arrived. I was gutted. They offered to bring another and I said no point, as I’d be getting ready for bed by the time that would arrive. I almost cried over my crisp sandwich watching them eat their food.

On the serious note as people have said, you couldn’t have had an egg allergy, so it is serious.

OP YADNBU!!

We were once sat waiting for a takeaway. Doorbell goes and DH goes to answer. Wanders back through with a brown paper bag of Chinese food. I said we ordered pizza!!

Turns out a Chinese had obviously got the wrong address and DH had just paid him for it without even thinking it wasn't pizza boxes!! We couldn't ring up as there was no indication of where it had come from!! We scraped the money together to pay for the pizza which did then show up and when it became apparent no one was coming back for the Chinese we had a look and it was the most random order ever of plain rice, chips, plain noodles etc but no actual main meals!!!!

To make matters worse we never order for Chinese to be delivered anyway as we use the one at the end of the street, I literally have no clue what was going through his head!!

When he goes to answer the door for a takeaway now I always say make sure it's ours

I didn;t know vagan pad thai existed. Nam pla? Dried shrimp? I thought these were essential.

Hiphopopotamus · 17/07/2019 08:28

I’m sure it’s not a traditional recipe @speakout but yes it does exist. Just think of it as a vegan noodle dish if that helps!

Had a response from deliveroo who are willing to refund the pad thai dish itself, but not the sauce and small fritters I bought too. As I had mixed both of these through the noodles (I know - heathen right?) before eating, the whole thing was inedible and I really feel like I should get a full refund. Apparently their system won’t allow them to refund all of it? Confused

I'm allergic to cheese and I quite often get given things with cheese on - either because they have mistaken my order or because they shove cheese all over something that isn't advertised to have it. It drives me mental because once cheese has melted, it's not easy to simply take it out (like DH does with unwanted tomatoes).

But "everyone loves cheese" apparently Hmm

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 17/07/2019 09:03

I’d be annoyed too.

You’ve paid good money for something and it’s not what was advertised, you didn’t get what you paid for.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 17/07/2019 09:07

Wrong takeaway is soooo disappointing.

I ordered chicken tagliatelle with NO truffle oil, and got chicken tagliatelle with NO CHICKEN!.
So basically plain pasta!

When I was pregnant (which seems to be a theme on this thread!), we ordered pizza from this lovely place which does great gluten free pizzas, on deliveroo. Unfortunately mine arrived looking like the driver had repeatedly ridden his scooter over it. There was crying. There was anger. By the time deliveroo and the pizza company agreed to send a new one, I was too tired to eat it, and therefore there was more crying. Grin

AntiHop · 17/07/2019 09:31

I was heavily pregnant. Ordered Thai from favourite place. It never turned up. When I called them, they blamed us, saying the driver had called through the letter box and we didn't hear. Funny how he did that as we lived in a flat with no letter box on the door.

We were so pissed off with them for lying that we didn't order or visit for a couple of years.

When my daughter was 2, we decided to break the boycott and visit. We're a vegetarian family. They gave us meat spring rolls. Daughter and I both bit into them, then my dp noticed they were meat.

Arghhhhh!

It's under new management these days which is good.

I have a sad takeaway story.

DH and I once ordered one for our anniversary, I'd been looking forward to it for months. We had very little money so I'd been putting a couple of pound a week away so I could order all my favourites.

DPS came (( very hot curry from the Indian )) and I waited.

And waited......getting more panicked I rang the chinese. No answer.

I finally caved at 11 and had pasta and sauce. It didn't come at all in the end. Like a salt filled, artery clogging dream being snatched away. :(

I could have ordered the next night but the moment had gone. It just wouldn't have been the same :(

stucknoue · 17/07/2019 09:41

It's tricky but vegan food unless from a vegan restaurant is very hit or miss, pad Thai does contain egg (otherwise it's just noodles) so I expect they got confused on the website perhaps. Indian food is more reliable for vegan but even then ghee can creep in. We've ordered vegetarian dishes that mysteriously contain fish from Thai restaurants (aren't vegan) because in se Asian cooking fish sauce is a seasoning. My dd is quite relaxed about it, she turns a blind eye

Hiphopopotamus · 17/07/2019 09:48

I do get that, but this was a chain restaurant that does state that certain dishes on their menu are vegan - I think I had the reasonable expectation that it would be!

Anyway, after a lot of back and forth emails this morning, sending a tweet did the trick - full refund is now being processed! (And I will order from elsewhere next time)

I am loving all the sad takeaway stories though - isn’t it funny how something so seemingly small can be so gutting! Grin

It’s not my week!! I’m up north for a work thing - my colleague nipped across the road to pick us up a portion of chips each to eat at the hotel. He knows I’m vegan and I asked him to double check the food there was ok. I started eating them and they seemed suspiciously crispy (and quite frankly too good) I googled the place and after a lot of searching found that they were cooked in flipping beef dripping!! So no more chips for me. Getting to go to bed feeling both hungry and queasy seems to be my thing this week 🙄

(And I can’t be too harsh on my colleague - he just didn’t think to double check about what they were cooked in)

Not a takeaway but a cock up regarding ingredients. I have no allergies so never need to think on it, was out with my mum at a spoons. We’ve been estranged 10 years so sitting for a pub dinner was a huge thing. I ordered a pint of some local beer for me and a red wine for my mum. She took one sip and was like...crap...this is Hardy’s isn’t it.

I never thought about her dairy allergy or egg allergy. And certainly wasn’t expecting allergens other than sulphites in red flipping wine! Apparently there’s egg and milk in it!
Cue anxiety attack for me. Mum was ok, she knows her warning signs and the staff were brilliant (and not expecting those allergens in wine either) but really got me nervous at our reconciliation...

TwistyTop · 20/07/2019 01:56

YANBU at all OP. Take away disappointments are the worst. It's supposed to be a treat! It usually comes at the end of a difficult day where the only thing that is going to make you feel better is hot, delicious, extremely unhealthy food that you haven't had to cook yourself.

Even if I received the wrong pizza topping, or something similarly trivial, it would still feel like the end of the world when I opened the box and discovered their mistake.

Hopefully they will offer you some sort of discount or voucher, in addition to the refund.
