Ours came from an ad on Pets4homes. Had no idea this wasn’t good. Dog has been fine though.

@Lovelyhotday thank you.

The advantages are not just for the breeder, but for the owner too of course. I will ALWAYS Take a dog back, no matter how old it is, with no notice and for any/no reason. I am always on the end of the phone. I will come and visit to help, I will help people learn to show, I will talk through issues. I provide life long holiday care if the owner wants it.

@wowowwow

Renting?! Really. They don’t pay me a monthly fee you know! This isn’t a used car. It’s a living breathing animal and it deserves all the protection I can extend to it, for the full extent of its life.

TreacherousPissFlap · 16/07/2019 21:41

DDog1 from a sport specific forum- turned up and the place was a nightmare. The guy was heading out big game shooting the next week and told us he would shoot whatever was left. Like mugs we paid up and bought DDog1 home- thankfully he's suffered no major ill effects and is still in good health at 12.
DDog2 from a local breeder. All boxes ticked, nice dog, all round good experience.
DDog3 we rescued from a bloke in a pub when we were pissed She's an utter monster and in all honesty, if I'd realised what a PITA she would turn out to be I wouldn't have taken her. As it goes we've had her five years and though she's such a hag we're secretly very fond of her ❤️

FenellaMaxwell · 16/07/2019 21:43

My dog is not a possession. She’s a living creature, and if I am not the best person for her and treating her with the love she deserves then I would be happy for the rescue to take her back. It’s not about her belong to me blindly like a pair of shoes - she’s a living, breathing, loving animal and it’s about what’s best for her.

StrongTea · 16/07/2019 21:44

Main thing is your dog is looked after, not irresponsibly bred from. I have 5, 1 is a failed sheepdog rehomed to me by farmer. Other 4 are a mix of breeder and word of mouth.

TheLime · 16/07/2019 21:46

Pets4homes. Cockatoo. I was very happy with the breeder and very happy with our lovely dog.

TheLime · 16/07/2019 21:46

CockaPoo!

Girliefriendlikescake · 16/07/2019 21:48

I've looked at rescues but haven't found a dog that is right for us, most dogs have some behavioural issues, are not guaranteed around young children or can't be homed with cats.

echt · 16/07/2019 21:48

Via the breed association who put me in touch with a reliable person, who can account for the parentage of the puppy and isn't running a home scale puppy farm. My dog's breed is all family raised so I saw the puppy's mum and dad.

Sarahlou63 · 16/07/2019 21:50

Dog 1. Neighbours bitch accidentally pregnant. Given one of the pups.
Dog 2. V. pregnant stray arrived and gifted us 8 pups. Kept two, one since run over Sad
Dogs 3 & 4. Friend gifted.
Dog 5. Rescued as a tiny pup from an abandoned litter. All others rehomed.
Dog 6. Just turned up one day and moved in.
Dog 7. Bought him! (always wanted an Irish setter).

Namechangeforthiscancershit · 16/07/2019 21:51

A breeder who did a load of health checks, which I wanted. I wasn't worried at all about the agreement- it seemed more to my benefit that to hers. A lot more.

AliasGrape · 16/07/2019 21:52

Someone who worked with my sister had just been through a separation and could no longer care for their dog, so was asking around if they knew anyone looking. I wasn’t looking but I met him and fell in love. That was 11 years ago ❤️

BasilTheGreat · 16/07/2019 21:53

From a KC breeder that health tests and also do their best to make sure their puppies go to a good home.

missbattenburg · 16/07/2019 21:59

This is how I feel and am always glad to hear breeders talk of their love and responsibility towards the lives they create, as viva has done here.

AllFourOfThem · 16/07/2019 22:03

Mainly rescue centres but I have had one who was used for breeding and then retired, so the breeder was selling on for almost nothing.

I’ve had to sign fairly similar contracts from rescue centres as well about not giving the dog or cat to anybody else. I think it’s fairly standard now although I would imagine it’s only ever enforced in exception circumstances we most people just want the animal to be in a loving and happy home.

ImNotReallyAWaitress · 16/07/2019 22:03

Reputable breeder who doesn’t have many litters. Spent a year deciding on a breeder then waited 18 months for a puppy.

I know people say adopt don’t shop but I can’t cope with going to an animal shelter and not being able to help all of them. I sponsor 2 dogs with dogs trust since I don’t feel able to go and adopt.

MajesticWhine · 16/07/2019 22:04

DDog1 from a friend/colleague who was breeding spaniels.
DDog2, DH found a breeder off gumtree, which I thought was pretty reckless to be honest. Not much research done.

wowowwow · 16/07/2019 22:05

My children aren’t possessions either. It doesn’t stop me making decisions for them.

@Malteserdiet were both labs health tested before you bred them?

AtSea1979 · 16/07/2019 22:07

Specific breed charity

SquishedPheasant · 16/07/2019 22:09

Preloved. Shouldn't have ever been looking let alone went through with the sale but felt so sorry for the scrawny, balding, scared dog that I went to see. Hes reactive to a lot of things but part of the family now.
Second dog is from a breeder, now my MIL funny how things work out!

RandomMess · 16/07/2019 22:13

A family having to refine one of their dogs advertised via local rescue. In turn they had hot her via dog trust.

Dog is in her element now being an only and is a complete princess Grin

PolkadotLollipop · 16/07/2019 22:14

Yes @Malteserdiet, were the site and dam hip and elbow scored, eye tested? Any genetic tests?

AllFourOfThem · 16/07/2019 22:16

My children aren’t possessions either. It doesn’t stop me making decisions for them.

It’s possible a situation may arise where you will no longer be able to make decisions for them. It’s the same principle. You are starting to sound goady and as if you are implying people should buy from puppy farms to avoid signing a contract because reputable breeders and rescue centres consider the well-being of a dog until it’s death to be important.

curlykaren · 16/07/2019 22:17

What was the name of the listings magazine? Not gumtree? A free paper full of ads. My mind says gumtree but happy to be wrong. He'll be 18 in October.

workhelp1 · 16/07/2019 22:18

One from a breeder listed on KC website, another from their relevant breed rescue, and the last from a breeder on Champdogs.

One from KC website was a pet breeder whereas the one from Champdogs is from good lines and was bred to work and show.
