I m a part time TA and my adult dc live with me. Dd earns about £1700 a month. Ds used to get £1100 but has been signed off sick (MH issues) and advised to only work part time for now.
We live in a council house and pay full rent but i get higher rate PIP for daily living (bipolar) and working tax credit.
I have been advised to claim UC as the change of circumstances (ds illness) means pre UC we would have qualified for some housing benefit.
However I have read all the horror stories of benefit delays and wonder if someone could answer this.
If i put in a UC claim will i immediately lose working tax credit? I think PIP is separate and have been awarded it until 2021.
On paper it seems i would be better off on UC and ds has to claim it anyway seperate to me.
Not aibu as such but hoping someone can advise.
I m hoping to increase my work hours in sept but would still apparently be able to claim.
Is Entitled to etc benefits checker reasonably accurate?
My situation is temporary but I have had a council benefits worker basically telling me off for not putting in a claim?
I m a professional person and i feel like a fool for not knowing my way round the benefits system Blush. Any help s appreciated (sorry it s long).

"I have been advised to claim UC as the change of circumstances (ds illness) means pre UC we would have qualified for some housing benefit."

This is confusing. So, now you would not be able to get housing benefit, so that is not a positive is it? I don;t really understand why it is better to change due to something which may be temporary?

Also change in income does not mean a change in circs moving you off tax credits. You can just update them, it is renewal time anyway.

It may be a palaver doing a new claim for UC - most people want to stay on tax credits as long as possible. I'm not sure. Maybe you would be better off. But the housing benefit thing is surely in the past.

Think you need to clarify how much you would benefit from this change, any conditionality may be put on you interviews etc, and then consider what you want to do. Maybe speak to another advisor. They have them at Mind as well. Good luck

Also yes, PIP is separate, and it bring you a premium due to your high rate care, (make sure you are getting that) which you may lose on UC.

And no, you would lose your working tax credit if you put in a new claim for UC.

"My situation is temporary"

Well, unsure why they are getting you to change the claim entirely then as it would only be for a short time. Maybe other with UC could advise though.

It downs to me like a can of worms I would leave if possible unless you really do benefit for a long term, and feel up to going through the interviews etc.
