Help! Where can I get a small amount (£25) of Swedish Krona by Thursday?

DS is going to a weekend sports event in Sweden. All meals are covered, and I'll give him some snacks to take, but as the debit card on his junior bank account cannot be used abroad, I would like to also give him a small amount of cash - around £25, for spending money at the hotel, venue, gift shop, airport etc.

Problem is, all my usual pick-up places for currency (Sainsbury's, Tesco, Post Office, M&S) either have a higher minimum spend, or else can't seem to get Swedish Krona by Thursday, which is the latest I would need to pick it up.

Before I do a trawl of other currency outlets, does anyone have any helpful advice?

I have a moneycorp card. Not the cheapest and once I stop being so lazy I'll find a better one. It's in my name but I gave him the pin and figured it would be unlikely anyone noticed.

WickedGoodDoge · 16/07/2019 16:05

Oh to add, he did use the card in Oslo without any problem.

Co-ordinate with other families.

I would transfer all but £100 out of my Monzo account (other current accounts are available) into another current account and let him use my Monzo card for the weekend. Then I would transfer the money back when he was home.

I highly recommend Thomas exchange global. I only use them and you get a better rate if you order online then pick up in store

Damntheman · 16/07/2019 16:28

I live in Scandinavia and it's not a problem to use cash. Anywhere tourists go is pretty much set up for it, I have no idea why some of you have had such problems!
250 SEK won't get him far, I'd advise that you put some money on his debut card and he uses it at the money exchange at any main train station to take out the kroner.

We went at Easter and never took any cash
Get him to Thomas Cook, take his passport and they'll give him a pre loaded card straight away, even comes with a fancy watch thingy he might like.

Slightly off topic but an interesting article here about cashless Sweden. It's the Daily fail sadly but it does highlight how difficult it is becoming to use cash there.

@Sparklingbrook I tend to only ever use my halifax credit card in Denmark.. It's easier than carrying cash and everyone accepts card..
Although certainly have had no issue using cash if I do have any

Sparklingbrook · 17/07/2019 07:28

Thanks Smurf.

Would you people please stop spreading that bullshit about not being able to use cash? It's simply not true!

WickedGoodDoge · 17/07/2019 15:33

Agree with SmartPlay . Grin DS had absolutely no problems only paying with cash in Stockholm last weekend. Having said that, he had no interest in going to the ABBA (cashless) museum. Grin

I've just returned from 5 days in Sweden and didn't use cash once. It's also awfully expensive (standard chocolate bar/water >£2). Re vending machines, I didn't see any that accepted cash.

SmartPlay · 17/07/2019 19:56

£2 for a chocolate bar or a bottle of a drink? Surely not in a supermarket - that doesn't sound very likely.

Damntheman · 17/07/2019 22:34

2 quid for water or a regular sized chocolate bar sounds standard for Norwegian supermarkets at least.

SmartPlay · 18/07/2019 09:53

Norway is much more expensive than Sweden.

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 18/07/2019 17:34

This was a 7-11.

SmartPlay · 18/07/2019 18:23

Yeah, well, 7-11, of course small shops/cafes/whateveryouwannacallthem are more expensive.

Damntheman · 18/07/2019 22:50

Åre wasn't that much cheaper than Trondheim (apart from sweets. Yay sweets!) in June but admittedly I haven't been south in Sweden in a few years :)
