No dentist near me is taking on patients

I need a dentist appointment. I've tried my best to get one but all dentists within 20 miles of me have closed their lists. Not one is taking on NHS patients. I'm on maternity leave and really can't afford private care. I've got a very minor toothache but don't know what to do.

Anyone else had this problem before?

Look further afield? My dentist is over an hours drive each way, it sucks but it's my only choice.

namechangedtohelpyou · 16/07/2019 11:45

I'm now at 35 miles and have managed to find one that has an appointment in October.

Phone 111 if serval emergency they will give you a local emergency appointment

MRex · 16/07/2019 11:57

I had the same issue and just went private, it's really difficult.

The link above lists NHS practices, that's the one I used, but I imagine OP is having the same issue as I had that the dentists all said their lists were full so they weren't taking on new NHS patients.

Starisnotanumber · 16/07/2019 12:00

What part of the country are you in maybe someone will know a new dentist or one that is taking on new patients.

MyOpinionIsValid · 16/07/2019 12:01

Ours refers into a private surgery

RockyRolly · 16/07/2019 12:05

There are walk in dentists. Just phone 111 or google you'll get the info about them.

namechangedtohelpyou · 16/07/2019 12:05

I phoned 111 and they've referred me to a service that deals with predominantly emergencies on the day. Have to phone at 8:30 tomorrow. Setting my alarm now!

There is no NHS dentist taking on new patients in my entire county.
Had to drive 70 miles to a private dentist last time I had tooth pain. It's a worry, & indicative of how things are going to go with the NHS as a whole ... not with a bang but a whimper, as the government engineers a gradual fading out of free healthcare.

dottiedodah · 16/07/2019 12:28

As someone else said 111 is your best bet TBH. If you are on mat leave then you should be able to access free dental work for the first year anyway. If you cant find an NHS dentist nearby ,then maybe when you return to work a patient Dental plan may be useful. You pay a certain amount each month and this is accepted towards treatments

BarrenFieldofFucks · 16/07/2019 12:32

They'll make you an appointment for an 'emergency'. Then I'd look for a dental plan of sorts. And get everything done while you're on maternity!

We live on an island, there are absolutely no dentists taking on adult NHS patients here at all. After a 6 month waiting list I think I have managed to get my kids in somewhere. 🤷

Vilanelle · 16/07/2019 12:46

Do you have any family members who could get you into theirs? I used to be a dental nurse and even when our books were closed, we would see sisters, brothers etc of patients.

nothingtowearever · 16/07/2019 12:47

Is there a dental hospital close by? They have walk in appointments for tooth ache

HariboLectar · 16/07/2019 12:49

Do you have a Dental School near you? They will take on patients I believe.

RaininSummer · 16/07/2019 12:54

It is a shocking state of affairs. I have been on a list for about a year so far but with 9000 approx on the list I'm not holding my breath. One of the problems apart from insufficient dentists, is that the list only allows you to name two areas and there may well be spaces somewhere else within reach but you would never know. If you phone random dentists you tend to get told to go on the list.

Foxyloxy1plus1 · 16/07/2019 13:13

We found an NHS dentist, but the practice was shit. I had no confidence whatsoever that they knew what they were doing g with my teeth? The one we have now does do NHS, but doesn’t have funding
So private is the only option.
