To ask when/if you realised you were the out of touch older generation

This year more than any I've realised just how out of touch I am with changes to society, before I was part of it but now the younger generations are changing and I'm the out of touch older generation, it's a weird feeling.

When I’m uncertain and unsure about people being transgender (I get pronouns wrong or still ask after someone’s ‘brother’) but DC see it as absolutely no issue at all that the boy I knew for 20 years as Donal is now a young woman called Dani and is now a sister. It’s not quite routine but it isn’t of much interest to them beyond respecting the individuals preference.

I think it’s a good thing. My parents were similarly puzzled and slightly disapproving of people being gay. My mum made me turn the tv off when Freddie Mercury was on Top of the Pops. Nowadays it’s no longer shocking to most people, indeed Mum’s brother has been with his male partmer and now husband for nearly 25 years and he is a much loved member of the family. Hopefully in 30 years time the shock and outrage around gender will also have died down.

Recently I mentioned to DD (aged 19) that I had been restarted using tooth whitening gel as my teeth had looked very yellow in a recent photo. She told me she could fix that with a filter and was most perplexed Confused when I said it was more important to me to actually look nice in real life than in an enhanced photo. That was a definite generation gap moment

I realised that I was one of the 'out of touch older generation' about 5 years (aged 50) when I didn't know about 75 % of the groups/artists who were in the charts, much less recognise any of the songs!

I don't even know what the sidebar of shame is

AlpenCrazy · 16/07/2019 17:04

I think I've come through the other side. Maybe I'm dead

I like
Love Island
Billie Eilish
I can use Snapchat Insta etc
I'm better at most IT than my teens

But I'm 52

And I know I am in flux as whilst watching Glasto I alternately desperately wanted to be there and cried at the lovely Alex thinking what a wonderful experience for a young maaaan

Dexterslockedintheshedagain · 16/07/2019 17:06

Aha! Thank goodness for google

Hearing or reading the list of 'celebrities' on a show or at a party and not recognising one of them.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/07/2019 17:11

Think of Minogue when you hear the name Kylie, rather than Jenner.

That girls nowadays can wear anything, regardless of their figure. Strappy vests, jean shorts, minis.

Certain clothes just didn’t come in larger sizes in the 90s, when I was a teenager / early twenties.

Kate Moss was an icon back then. Now we’ve got models of all sizes, which is great for young girls.

I remember seeing Friends recently and being shocked at how thin Rachel & Monica actually were...

That’s the look my best friend & me were striving for. We just wouldn’t go out in shorts, unless we were size 8 (smallest size back then).

I dunno, but even radio 4 is full of vacuous shit these days. I regularly shout at it and have to turn it off.

I'm totally not, but I fondly imagine myself to be above all the pop culture and spend my days reading The Times, classic novels and gardening 😂

I do feel sorry for the young now though because their music really is crap and totally lacking in genuine musicianship or talent.

Echobelly · 16/07/2019 17:35

Reading articles in magazines all about using Instagram and types of people on Instagram and hashtags on Instagram and influencers on Instagram.

I don't use Instagram.

Mummyshark2018 · 16/07/2019 17:44

Dunno, have yet to experience that at 36. But I'm prob one of those people described upthread who likes make up, nice eyebrows (hd), fashion, clubbing, festivals, weekends away with friends, concerts etc. But I also like days out with dc, musicals, chilling at home with a glass of wine listening to smooth radio (or watching love island!) and walking the dog. I work with young people and do keep up with what's going on in their world so that probably helps. I really hope I don't lose touch with the younger generation as it would be detrimental to my work.

WalkofShame · 16/07/2019 22:23

What are HD eyebrows? Are they the tattooed ones?

WalkofShame · 16/07/2019 22:25

I’ve just google image searched, not what I would call nice eyebrows, which is probably another sign that I’m out of touch.
