WIBU to have a birthday/naming ceremony?

When my son was born, I really wanted to do a naming ceremony for him. I'm not religious however I wanted to do a very laid back humanist ceremony, to bring people together and celebrate the birth of my son - it would be extra special as I was unwell and really did not think I would conceive. It's incredible that I did.

My ex wouldn't agree to this. He said it was a stupid idea. I've now left him and he has no access to our son. He abused both of us. It was horrific and I fled. He now doesn't know where I live and I have a police marker on the house, they're that concerned.

WIBU to have a naming ceremony on my son's first birthday? Really chilled. Nothing heavy. Just a few nice words, I would like to choose the equivalent of godparents. I feel it's important that I do this, but I'm still hearing my ex telling me it's an awful idea...

If you received an invite, as a friend of mine, what would you think?

I think it's a lovely idea. I've heard of other people combining the two events so it's definitely got precedent. Smile

And well done on acting in the best interests of both your child and yourself and getting away from the abuser. Flowers

Both my nephews had naming ceremonies on their first birthdays. Its becoming more common. They did a speech and introduced the nephews 'god'parents/supporters who also did a speech.

Go for it.

We had one at about 6 months (summer!) and it was a lovely day, we kept it quite casual, had the ceremony with guide parents and did a BBQ at the venue afterwards. Everyone seemed to enjoy it! Our celebrant said that they do a lot of joint 1st birthday/naming ceremonies. I think it's nice to not do it when they're teenie tiny as you know their personality more if you wait a little longer.

For my youngest daughter we combined her first birthday with her Christening. It was a lovely event. Nothing but just a tea party in the church hall after the service.
I see your celebration as being the same kind of event but you've simply chosen a naming celebration rather than a church christening.
Go for it. Have a fabulous time.

We threw a big first birthday, didn't bother with the ceremony bit but it was along the lines you are thinking, worked well
