Doctors receptionist told me I was rude

I had a 4 week wait for my appt today and had bloods took 4 weeks ago, 2 came back abnormal and the doctor asked me to repeat them and book to see her next week so she can do an action plan.

I went to reception and asked for an appt for next week, told none available, week after then, none available, receptionist said none for 4 weeks.

Okay can I have an appt for 4 weeks time I asked, I then got told that I can't book that far ahead.

I asked her what do I do? the doctor has requested a follow up and I can't book one?

I never raised my voice.

The receptionist said same day appts are emergencies so they are not available either.

I then said forget it and went to walk off and she shouted I was rude.

I burst into tears as I left as it had took so much courage to go the doctors as I found this really an embarrassing situation to discuss.

I understand the reception staff get abuse but I was not rude.

It was just me and 2 reception staff so now I am in tears thinking I will be struck off as the posters suggest for being rude.

It really will be her word against mine.

I have never felt so rough I really needed to get referred and now I can't even get an appt.

Any ideas, please be gentle I am feeling very upset.

Absolutely YANBU. How upsetting. You are owed an apology, she was out of order. I would have been far ruder to her! Really don't like the way so many GP receptionists are, it puts me off making an appointment sometimes as mine get so sniffy if you are unable to make the appointment time they suggest (and as a working mum I often can't). I have the utmost respect for the NHS and no issues with the docs and nurses...but receptionists need to be showing basic kindness to the public too, many of whom are there because they are worried about their health. Imagine how many will be put off booking smears or getting lumps checked because of this!

Good luck OP. Definitely echo what others are saying about contacting your GP direct.

Instead of saying forget it and storming off you would have got a better result if you had just explained the situation and asked them to help you.

"if you had just explained the situation and asked them to help you."

She did!

"I asked her what do I do? the doctor has requested a follow up and I can't book one?"

Should the OP have fallen on her knees and begged for an appointment? Hmm

The receptionist was extraordinarily unhelpful. It may very well be the case she didn't have appointments to give the op but she could have gone about it with a different manner - offered to speak to one of the doctors or practice nurses to see if anything could be done. There was no need for her to shout that op was rude.
I am an NHS worker and to be honest I am constantly amazed by the amount of staff working on front desks and reception who seem to think they are the personal gatekeepers of all clinical staff and forget that patients are human beings and treating them as an irritation rather than a person. Why so many people who don't actually like people or dealing with the public choose to take jobs that put them right in the front line is beyond me.

As someone who has dealt with hospital appointments I don't get why GP receptionists seem to behave so much worse as a group than their hospital equivalents.
