I saw a post last night whilst lurking about someone wanting to thank their DC's teacher etc and I can't seem to find the thread anymore, plus I didn't have time to read all the responses so I thought I would make my own thread.

In secondary school is it the norm to send emails here and there to thank teachers who have helped your DC? I ask this because I have a DS in year 9 who laughed when I asked him if he wanted me to write a nice note to his form tutor who has been really lovely and supportive over the year. So I suppose that won't be happening Grin

But I do have a DSD in Y7 at the same school and DH wanted to send her form tutor who also has been lovely and very, very helpful this year. She's supported DSD through many issues, etc and really has gone above and beyond. DS told DH that he shouldn't write an email as if DSD's classmates found out, they would have a laugh at her.

So AIBU to ask what is the etiquette for thanking teachers in secondary as DH and I aren't too sure to be frank Blush It is very different from primary to be fair!

Send a thank you card. It will be cherished.

noblegiraffe · 15/07/2019 18:16

An email thanking the teacher would be incredibly appreciated, especially if you copied in their line manager.

pariscity · 15/07/2019 18:18

noble Would their line manager be their head of department? I'm not too sure how schools work!

Count Instead of an email? I doubt DSD would have the confidence to give it to her in front of everyone though!

Post it. Go retro.

LolaSmiles · 15/07/2019 18:28

It would be appreciated very much.

Either a card direct to the teacher or an email to them with the head copied in. Our head always passes on good things.

MyOpinionIsValid · 15/07/2019 18:29

Form Tutors will report to heads of Year, who will be responsible to an assistant head for that key stage

Subject teachers will be responsible to Head of Department who in turn with be responsible to an assistant head for that faculty.

I have emailed in a couple of times over the years and each teacher has responded by how much they have appreciated a thank you email.

Good grief, parents saying thank you to secondary school teachers = rarer than hens' teeth.

Parents complaining to/about us otoh 🙄

It always makes my bloody year when a parent says thank you. And I cherish the cards I get from kids. You have no idea what a difference you can make by a gesture like this.

HappydaysArehere · 15/07/2019 18:33

I loved the notes/cards which I received as a teacher. Gave me new energy to be appreciated.

Powerof4 · 15/07/2019 18:48

Has always made me so happy when a parent has been kind enough to email. Don't copy anyone in though - it's a personal thank you, don't make it feel like a performance review!

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 15/07/2019 18:53

Please do send an email. It will be hugely appreciated and will get to the right member of staff even if you send it to the enquiries at the school.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 15/07/2019 18:54

Posted too soon! It means so much to get a thank you. My cards from some of my y11 leaves are proudly displayed on the mantle piece at home. I was so chuffed

LittleAndOften · 15/07/2019 18:57

Secondary school teachers don't get many thank-yous as students have so many different teachers, so any card, note or email is really cherished. I'm a SAHM these days but I still keep my cards and letters from students I taught and their parents in a special folder. It means more than you know.

CaptainBrickbeard · 15/07/2019 19:00

I have a box with the thank you cards I’ve received and it honestly gives me motivation to keep on going when I think I can’t stand one more day in the job! When I have teenagers complaining at me all day, it is so meaningful and precious to have a thank you or an acknowledgement of what I’ve done. Please do it!

PoptartPoptart · 15/07/2019 20:00

It would be really nice if the note could come from your DS too? Maybe post a card if he is too embarrassed to give it to the teacher in school?
Funnily enough my year 9 DS has just written one for his English teacher. He struggles with English comprehension but his teacher this year has been fantastic and really helped to engage him with fun and interesting lessons. I am so grateful that he is finally making progress and proud that he recognises this and wants to thank her.

But that thread was deleted because the poster was a major troll, who had more than one child at the same school, one of whom was quite different to t’other.

Hmm
