To ask NDN builders to stop using my driveway? eay

So, came home today to find new NDN having work done. However, the builders are using the side of my garage wall to lean their woodworking equipment on to cut their wood and sitting under my window having a break and a fag. On my driveway. They can clearly see I'm sitting there. To explain, we are 2 detached houses, with front monobloc driveways next to each other. They access their back garden via the side, where the driveways meet, which is quite narrow. We have an extension at this side, with a window overlooking our drive. We access our back garden via the other side. As we have different monobloc it is clear to see which area belongs to who. They have piled the debris from the other house along their side access and so are using ours to do the work and sit smoking. This was bad enough, but their female "supervisor" came out and gave them seats to sit on my driveway, under my window!! Final straw. I went out and asked them to not use my property. She was so passive aggressive, asking if she was allowed to "step" on my side. Was I unreasonable to ask them to move themselves and their woodworking equipment? I did so politely, but I am so angry. If they had asked I would have said yes, it's really no big deal. It was the attitude, especially hers. She was virtually mocking me. Am I over reacting??

Nah. They should have knocked first. The smoking would have pushed me over the edge.

TheFastandCurious · 15/07/2019 17:58

YANBU they are bad mannered CF

SagAloojah · 15/07/2019 18:00

YANBU. And do them no favours for the pass agg. Cheeky gits.

familycourtq · 15/07/2019 18:02

YANBU. I have learnt a new term from this thread - are you in Scotland by any chance?

C0untDucku1a · 15/07/2019 18:04

No yanbu. I had similar from builders working on next door. They actually got aggressive and did damage to my property with the digger they put on my drive as soon as i left for work. Council did fuck all. Werent at all intereed.

Purpleartichoke · 15/07/2019 18:13

I would have probably said yes if they were polite and asked and it wasn’t going to cause me any problems.

The instant someone lit a cigarette on my property, they would be gone and not allowed to step a single foot into my space.

They should know better on both accounts.

SagAloojah · 15/07/2019 18:15

New term? Monobloc?

HairyFloppins · 15/07/2019 18:17

YANBU, very rude and I would tell them to move. Or put a sprinkler near there.

balonzz · 15/07/2019 18:20

Perhaps you should have a word with the NDN too.

Littletabbyocelot · 15/07/2019 18:20

I think they can't smoke on site? We had some council funded green improvements done and complained (mildly) about them leaving cigarette buts across our garden. I didn't mind them smoking just wanted them to clean up. Anyway it all got very formal because they said smoking on site was illegal. Maybe they were trying to get round that by going onto your property?

Willow2017 · 15/07/2019 18:26

Sorry but i have to ask what part of ops post was 'Scottish'?
I am Scottish and can't see anything😀

Hedgehogparty · 15/07/2019 18:27

I sympathise. Problem is they can make your life unpleasant.
Our NDN had building work for 3 years start to finish. I’d often get home to find our drive blocked with vans, building materials on our drive and on one occasion, a van parked on our drive.
When they ignored my requests to stop parking and obstructing our drive, I spoke to the neighbour whose response was that he wasn’t getting involved.

Builders don’t seem to care at all, it’s a job to finish and if other people are inconvenienced, tough.

DPotter · 15/07/2019 18:30

Call around to your NDN this evening and tell them, don't ask, that you don't want the workman on your drive at all. |It's up to the people having the work done to sort out this type of thing. Bet the workmen said to your NDN - is it OK to use ND drive and they said yes without even thinking.
Remember - tell them, don't ask

Dippypippy1980 · 15/07/2019 18:31

I once looked out my window to see a works van parked on my lawn collecting garden waste from next door. CF neighbour was standing out chatting to him. I was just out of the shower and by the time I dressed they had both gone, leaving bits of tree strewn across my lawn.

I would never have allowed anyone working for me to be so disrespectful of my neighbours property. But people are selfish, inconsiderate assholes😊

1nutcracker · 15/07/2019 18:32

Yes, I'm in Scotland. Monobloc is brick or block paving. I will be speaking to NDN, as I can imagine what the "supervisor" said. NDN is new and I've only spoken to her once. As I said, I would probably have said yes, if they had asked. DH thinks it no big deal.

YANBU - but I am more invested in what phrase was considered to be Scottish sounding!

ParkheadParadise · 15/07/2019 18:33

Is it the op calling a cigarette a fag that makes you think she's Scottish.
Can't see anything else, that would make you think that.

SagAloojah · 15/07/2019 18:36

Monobloc has to be the Scottish parlance.

Gustavo1 · 15/07/2019 18:43

Yanbu op. They have no reason to be on your property at all. It’s not precious to expect people just to come and hang out on your driveway. It doesn’t matter how near or far from your property that they are working.
I had this last week. The neighbour’s cleaner actually parked on my front lawn then swore at me when I asked her to move the car and not to park on my garden!

BookwormMe2 · 15/07/2019 18:45

Our NDN had work done recently which meant their front garden was blocked with scaffolding and all manner of crap, so the builders thought they would just traipse across our garden instead to get to the side access we share! I went nuts and told them in no uncertain terms it was private land and they did not have access. YWDNBU to nip it in the bud on day 1, otherwise it'll drive you mad (no pun intended!).

WhereDoesThisToiletGo · 15/07/2019 19:52

We've got building work starting next month and I've already made it clear to the builder that he shouldn't piss off my neighbours!

Mummyoflittledragon · 15/07/2019 19:56

YADNBU
It’s just safety in numbers. You brought out the nasty teenage / school child in her.

familycourtq · 15/07/2019 21:54

Yep monoblock was the Scottish term I learned - interesting.

familycourtq · 15/07/2019 21:55

Sorry - that's monobloc I had never heard it used in that context before.

BaronessBomburst · 15/07/2019 21:58

I'm from Kent and call it monobloc. Confused
