Dog left in car "not my job" says traffic warden

I just reported a dog left in a car, to the SSPCA and the police.

They asked if I could say how long it might be there. It didn't have a ticket saying when it would be parked to but I saw a traffic warden check it on the system so assumed it had used RingGo parking app.

I went to ask the warden if he could tell me when the car was parked until. My first line was that there was a dog left in a car. He interrupted me immediately to say "that's nothing to do with me".

Am I wrong to think that even if it's not part of your job, (although I actually think it should be), as a human person you would still report it?

It took me less than 5 minutes to make two calls to report. Are traffic wardens that busy they don't have 5 minutes? Are there so many people doing it that TW could spend all day reporting owners?

He probably has no official power to do anything about it and wrongly assumed you'd expect him to take some kind of immediate action. I would expect any reasonable human to stop an animal suffering, though. Perhaps TWs have been given official guidance not to get involved, or they might not be allowed to use their mobiles while on duty.

Was the dog in distress?

purplecorkheart · 15/07/2019 15:06

He couldn't tell you how long the car was there even if he wanted to.

The dog was panting hard, yelping. So, yeah I'd say so.

I was sitting in my car next to it for about ten minutes. Both front windows wide open and I was very hot.

TW was able to tell me when it was parked until. (Another 3 hours, so not just popping in somewhere - on this street at 3.50 per hour, you don't pay for extra if you don't think you'll need it)

or they might not be allowed to use their mobiles while on duty.

If they aren't, many round here ignore that!

A dog died yesterday after being left in a car in co.fermanagh (NI) it was six months old and had been left in a parked vehicle with no open window.

How do these people have dogs? It's beyond me.

Travis1 · 15/07/2019 15:24

Hope the dog got out OP. Sounds shit.

Police investigation launched after dog died in car.

The poor dog - I hate it when people don't take the risks seriously. Why leave a dog alone in a car for three hours anyway, regardless of the weather?!

Unfortunately I had a dr appointment with DD so I couldn’t hand around to see what happened. SSPCA said they would send someone out.
