Tying a Necktie. On which side does the wide side start?

Seems many tutorials and illustrations are mirror image.
But if want to tie on DH, that would be viewed backwards.

So, does the wide side start on the (wearer's) left or right?
I thought I knew, but now I am confused!
DH and I start opposite.

It can be done either way, really --
but how do you/does your DP tie his, please?

Wide on the left then crossed over.

ihadedto · 15/07/2019 13:08

You could get him to sit or kneel down, you stand behind him (as though you were doing your own tie) and do it that way.
But standing opposite him, the wide side is on the right.

Etino · 15/07/2019 13:09

But why are you doing it?

ihadedto · 15/07/2019 13:10

Aargh! Already conflicting views! Does it depend on whether you’re wrapping g the long side round the ‘stem’ (the narrow bit) twice? An Oxford knot, I think?

ihadedto · 15/07/2019 13:11

Actually cancel that last comment. How on earth could the number of times it’s wound round affect which side it starts out onBlush

Pascha · 15/07/2019 13:13

I've just gone upstairs and tried it with DH's tie on me. It works both ways.

Apolloanddaphne · 15/07/2019 13:15

I put the wide side on the right.

Pascha · 15/07/2019 13:16

Meaning the end result looks the same so it's immaterial which way you go.

NoTheresa · 15/07/2019 13:17

Immaterial?! Ha
Wide to the right.

TapasForTwo · 15/07/2019 13:18

Ie depends on whether you are left or right handed. When I was at school the wide bit was on the right because I am right handed.

Malibucyprus · 15/07/2019 13:21

Left side for the person wearing the tie, if you’re tying it for him standing in front, it’d be your right side.

MyOpinionIsValid · 15/07/2019 13:22

If you are tying your own tie, the wide is on the right

steff13 · 15/07/2019 13:25

I always put the wide side on the person's right. So if I'm facing him, it's on my left.

Blobby10 · 15/07/2019 13:31

Wide to the right here too Grin

TruffleShuffles · 15/07/2019 13:31

I tie a tie with the thick side on the left. I find it impossible to tie a tie on someone else so I always tie it on myself and leave it loose for them to slip over their head and tighten themelsves.

PanchoBarnes · 15/07/2019 14:01

Thanks all for your replies!
So a few differing, but it seems generally, wide starts on the (wearer's) right.
Of course it can be done either way, but I thought there might be a set "rule" for neckties -- similar to the standard of mens shirts/coats/robes go left over right; and womens right over left.
Thanks again!

Sorry, your husband can't tie his own tie? Did he go to school?

PanchoBarnes · 15/07/2019 14:04

To answer @Etino --

Because he's had surgery on his shattered forearm.
We're going to a funeral, and I'm tying his tie for him.

Beyond this, I often like to do it, anyway.

TapasForTwo · 15/07/2019 14:05

Can you buy a clip on tie?
Sorry for your loss Flowers

PanchoBarnes · 15/07/2019 14:06

。。。
@Paddington68:

See reply to equally obtuse pp Etino.

@PanchoBarnes
Sorry, as I posted I had an inkling it would be something like that and came back to check and apologise.
Put it on yourself loosely and transfer?

PanchoBarnes · 16/07/2019 08:38

Aww, thank you @Etino,
Apology appreciated, and accepted.

@TapasForTwo
We do know how to tie a tie (from either side, actually) but was just wondering what side others placed the wide end when starting; or if there were a 'wrong' side.
And, thank you.

Wide to right here too, I learnt when I was about five as we had to wear ties a t primary school, I can't seem to teach my 12_yr old son though so I have just bought him a clip on tie for school.
