Tulip or Moon Cup?

Just want opinions and experiences!

Would love not to have 10 years (or so) of environmental impact on the environment (my sanitary items) but also want to teach both DD's to have environmental responsibility. Can't do that without my own experience/confidence. What is best for me (age 42) and DD's (20 and 12).

I have started using a mooncup and it's been a total gamechanger for me.

The first couple of periods I actually looked forward to my period so that I could use it!

I'm not sure I would have been confident to use one when I was younger, or even before I had kids. You do need to have a good old rummage to ensure it's in properly, especially when you first start using it.

Hellosunshine30 · 14/07/2019 22:10

I started using the Mooncup last year. It is amazing. Wish I had done it long before. I was always someone who used pads as I didn't like tampons, so was a bit skeptical about the Mooncup, but it's so comfortable. The first time I used it I was going to throw it away because it got stuck lol, but with perseverance, I changed my mind. Go for it.

BeanBag7 · 14/07/2019 22:13

I used a moon cup for a few years and it was great. Would definitely recommend. After having a baby mine no longer fitted even when I bought the bigger size so I suppose you have to be prepared for it to be wasted as it just doesnt suit some people.

I have also bought washable sanitary towels which could be good for 12YO if shes not comfortable with inserting a moon cup or tampon, it can be a bit fiddly! Also using a moon cup at school can be a bit tricky as she wouldnt be able to wash it out in the sinks there. Some people wipe with tissues but others prefer to give it a rinse.

One of my best friends tried but has Beverly heavy periods and said it failed her. I think she's seriously heavy though! I'm so keen, I don't use pads much but despite that feel slightly ill about him much environmental impact I've had. I don't want to pass this on to next generation!

Tulip cup is softer but slightly larger than my mooncup.

I have the stem cup which you can pinch to drain but (sorry, graphic) I only use it on my heaviest days as I find the stem sometimes gets caught or pokes and hurts, whereas I have been able to trim my mooncup stem right back

I would say it honestly took at least 3 periods until I was comfortable with the cups, I recommend using towels at the same time until you perfect getting it in and open correctly.

Now I’m used to them, I far prefer them to tampons and wouldn't go back at all

No one can really advise you because we’re all so different down there. Do you know the height of your cervix? Theirs? How’s your pelvic floor?

Give the Put A Cup In It quiz a go for all of you and have a read of their website too (plus helpful videos in YouTube and Facebook group)

I happily use a Saalt cup, I also have a Lunette size 2 I haven’t tried yet.

@BeanBag7 thank you, this is why I'm wondering tulip cup? Am I wrong in thinking it catches more? I read you only need to change every 12 hrs so was thinking we could get through school/work without worrying?

Get that when DD 12 starts she may not go straight to this!

Have a look at some of the comparison videos. It depends on things like low/high cervix, as well as age, pregnancies, and so on. I like but there are others.

For me, the mooncup is just too big to be comfortable. I have one and have used it in emergencies but I always know it's there and getting it in and out is no fun. The Lunette is perfect for me. The Tulip Cup is a bit small and too flexible, so it doesn't always open.

Using a cup is GREAT if you're at school or work all day because most people do not need to change it during the day. I only ever change mine first thing in the morning and last thing at night. And it is completely fine just to empty it and wipe with loo roll before putting back if you need to.

Wildboar · 14/07/2019 22:19

I had a moon-cup and heavy periods and it does leak. I’ve switched to saalt one and no leaking whatsoever! So go with that if you’re heavy.

No advice for younger people as only started using mine post childbirth. Mooncup and saalt are quite firm so wouldn’t recommend for the twelve year old who I imagine is not fully adult sized yet.

notmuchmoretogive · 14/07/2019 22:20

@BuffaloCauliflower so many things to think about!

Night all but appreciate any advice! Smile

I adored my mooncup pre-dc and after dc1. It hasn't felt as comfortable after dc2 (I did change size after dc1 as recommended). Must try again. Have been tempted to try other brands so would be keen to hear others who've switched

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/07/2019 22:22

Yes they can be worn for up to 12 hours depending on flow. I put mine in before work and take it out at in the evening. Saves so much faff! Plus I can preemptively insert when I think I’m due on, so no accidents.
It can people a bit of time to get right, the right cup properly installed around the cervix won’t leak unless really over full.

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/07/2019 22:23

@CastleCrasher give the PACII quiz I linked a go

ExtraFox19 · 14/07/2019 22:27

For a brief second I thought this was a baby names thread 😲

ethelfleda · 14/07/2019 22:34

I love my mooncup. I was sceptical - but find it better than tampons as it doesn’t leak.
Only used it for 2 periods so far but it’s great! Be sure to get the right size.

CastleCrasher · 14/07/2019 22:35

@BuffaloCauliflower I have tried the quiz and ordered a new brand! Fingers crossed, and thank you!

BuffaloCauliflower · 14/07/2019 22:38

@CastleCrasher fab! If you’re on Facebook the group on there is really helpful.

itsabongthing · 14/07/2019 22:46

Love my moon cup but think I would have struggled pre childbirth, I do fjn I need to wear pads too for the first couple of days especially if I’m at work so unfortunately that slightly dilutes the environmental benefit but terrified of leaking at work and it does sometimes leak when flow is at its heaviest.
Would like to try another type but they are not cheap.

BuffaloCauliflower · 16/07/2019 22:10

@itsabongthing I’ve not had children and just fine with a cup. They’re all different and we’re all different, that’s why the quiz is so helpful
