To ask what exercises you did whilst pregnant?

I'm getting married in September and found out recently I am pregnant.

Obviously very happy about it but also nervous about weight gain as I've already bought my dress.

I've been losing weight for a while now (2 dress sizes down so far) and want to keep this up but safely.

Can anyone recommend some exercises you did whilst pregnant?

I carried on as normal. Swimming yoga cycling and running but the latter only the first few months

Jinglejanglefish · 14/07/2019 19:26

Yoga, pregnant Pilates and swimming.

OhFuckity · 14/07/2019 19:27

I actually did a run at the weekend but found myself tiring so much quicker than normal and I'm only about 5 weeks! Sad

Yep I did the same exercise as normal? Gym, swimming, pilates. I did stop running at about 5 months as my hips were fucked.

Pregnancy is a very normal state. Just be normal. You’re not ill.

SummerHouse · 14/07/2019 19:31

Swimming is great. I remember staff asking when I was due one time and I said "five days ago". This is their face = Confused

OhFuckity · 14/07/2019 19:32

I've been doing a lot of ab workouts previously?

I did crossfit until 6 months and then I had to stop as I was the size of a whale. My bump was just too big to carry on with it safely. If you are already doing exercise carry on with what you are doing. It's not normally recommended to start anything new though when pregnant.

I dislike this statement. It's not an illness, but it does change your body and the baby saps all the goodness out of it! I couldn't breathe deeply in my first pregnancy and my hips were fooked in my second one!

OP, advice is generally to keep doing what you have been doing, don't take up anything new. I swam and did pregnancy yoga in my first. Nothing in my second as I could barely reach the front door, let alone run.

Doje · 14/07/2019 19:38

Oh, and congratulations on the engagement and baby!

Fivebyfivesq · 14/07/2019 19:40

Yoga every day without fail up to and including being admitted to hospital. Their faces when they saw I had my yoga mat with me 😂 I gained fairly minimal weight and felt healthy and strong, never felt fatigued and I’m sure it was the reason.

I also only got really ‘big’ in the last four weeks I felt.

Best of luck for your wedding OP I am sure you will look absolutely beautiful.

MIdgebabe · 14/07/2019 19:41

CARRied on as normal until about 5 months when I could no longer climb as the bump got in the way. SO cycle,,run, walk, yoga. Doctor wanted reassurance that I wasn’t doing contact sports like rugby and advised not to start something new

transformandriseup · 14/07/2019 19:41

I was told not to start any vigorous excercise I didn’t already do but swimming yoga and Pilates will be fine. You don’t need extra calories if you are in the first trimester but don’t cut down too much either.

MIdgebabe · 14/07/2019 19:43

But very second the idea that each body and pregnancy are different so take it easy if you feel wrong doing something.

OhFuckity · 14/07/2019 19:45

Thanks all! I think I will keep doing what I have been minus the ab workouts so running, walking and cardio workout DVDs.

I think it's more in my head but I feel uncomfortable doing the ab stuff now I know.

I continued going to the gym (reducing the weights as the pregnancy
advanced), walked and generally carried on as before. Fortunately I was physically well during pregnancy once morning sickness passed.

Mycatwontstopstaring · 14/07/2019 20:21

Really listen to your body as we all react differently to pregnancy. Much depends where you carry the extra fluid. You may be slim with a tidy bump or you may have a swollen neck and face and ankles. You can’t control where your body chooses to carry the extra, just eat well and do, regular gentle exercise. Walking and swimming are pretty safe, my doctor said not to do anything that significantly raises the heartbeat and obviously no sit ups etc. Yoga didn’t feel right to me and my friend seriously injured herself from squatting because her ligaments were so soft from the pregnancy.

On the bright side for your wedding you will have a pregnancy glow and probably great boobs and no need to worry about waistline.

I assume you won’t be dieting, you can mess your baby up with that. Again listen to your body. I had a week of dreaming about chips and it turned out that was the week the baby was growing its layer of fat: if your body wants something there is probably a good reason.

Morticiaismystyleicon · 14/07/2019 20:47

Listen to your body, it'll tell you what's ok and what's not. If you're 5 weeks you're probably starting the first trimester tiredness phase which some women suffer quite badly with and some don't. Your boobs might get quite sore so don't push running, walk or swim or just go to bed until it passes. I buggered my knees during my first pregnancy because previous to that my cleaning and washing regime involved a lot of kneeling/ squatting. It hurt but I just did it anyway and with hindsight I shouldn't have. Just a small thing that took 10-20 mins every day and I ignored it thinking it'd just be ok after but during my 2nd pregnancy I did none of it because I had to stop in the months after my first because it just got worse and worse and I stood no chance of even trying it long before my 2nd was conceived. If it doesn't feel good, don't do it.
That's not to say you should sit in bed stuffing your face! Just bear in mind that everything goes a bit soft and easily damaged during pregnancy.
