To stop dying my grey hair?

I'm about 80% or more grey and have shoulder length hair which I've dyed a sort of mid dark ashy brown for years. I"m sick of it and think that my skin tone must have altered and I'll look better with lighter hair now.

I want to stop dying the roots and let it grow out to its natural grey, cut most of it off into a bob or shorter and have it dyed blonder.

I can't afford to go and have it all stripped and dyed at the moment and it's in such bad condition that I think I need to start over.

The thought of looking like that is offputting though...a big grey stripe at the roots! I could wear hats I suppose but gosh...am I crazy to consider it? Has anyone else done this?

Could you dye it grey?

OwlDoll · 14/07/2019 15:10

Join the Going Gray Guide Facebook group.

I'm pretty sure you can buy dye stripper in Boots? Definitely online?

And buy some purple shampoo.

Theflying19 · 14/07/2019 15:13

Or if its vaguely wavy join the curly silvers Facebook group. Go for it!

Heratnumber7 · 14/07/2019 15:20

Or cut it Judi Dench short?

RosaWaiting · 14/07/2019 15:22

Quite a few posters in Style and Beauty have done it, I think, I hope, it’s on the increase!

elQuintoConyo · 14/07/2019 15:28

I let mine grow out naturally, braved the badger stripe. However, I had bobbed hair just below my ears, do it didn't take long.
I don't have the money for stripping and redycing and.... any kind of faff!
It's 80% white and a bit of dark brown underneath, bloody fabulous!
I can wear black Grin

Ta-da!

It's do-able and I think you'll love it...... eventually. They say the first 6 months are the hardest. Without going shorter it might take you a total of 2 years: that's a scary prospect . But the condition will be safer that way rather than stripping/dyeing/ highlighting etc. Some times the long way is the best.
After 6 months it starts to look intentional.
Root sprays were my saviour and yes, there are excellent Facebook/Instagram groups for inspiration and ideas. Good luck.
For me it was a matter of if not now, when?
I too was " battling" with 80% grey underneath.

I let mine grow out a few years back when I was late forties, but salt and pepper so I didn’t have a stark line. I’m not silver enough now, only round the temples and then dark brown in back.
I’d just let it grow out - what about a pixie cut - have you thought about short - that can look fab. Not for me though , my head’s too big for a pixie sadly but for those they suit they look great. Lots of Facebook groups for encouragement.

CitizensNotSubjects · 14/07/2019 15:36

That's lovely, Quinto

dudsville · 14/07/2019 15:37

First of all, tons of its have done this. It's so very worth it! Secondly, the growing out phase can be painful but it's short lived. By this time next year (sooner?) It will all be behind you.

NoLeopard · 14/07/2019 15:37

I went from the stripe to foils then let them grow out. It took about a year. Am growing my hair long at the moment as I'm not sure what style suits me. Started using purple shampoo and the colour is not too bad after the initial shock! Very liberating though

Tigger365 · 14/07/2019 15:38

I’m 30 and I’ve given up on dying mine before I’ve really begun lol

PookieDo · 14/07/2019 15:39

I would cut it all first then start growing out. I often spray my roots with the L’Oréal touch up spray have you thought of that?

NoLeopard · 14/07/2019 15:46

Quinto your grey is gorgeous. Just taken this photo of mine and didn't realise what horrible condition it was in. I've never looked this closely beforeShock!

Would thoroughly recommend this, turned out for me and loads of others on Gray and Proud fb group to be so about so much more than hair colour. Loads of inspirational stories there and boosted confidence from going against the norms society tells us we should do. Plus methods - eg dye the parting only until the gray is long enough, go short pixie, colour stripping or cold turkey (which I did for long hair with bright white from dark brown - was nowhere near as bad as I thought it would be and hair is a great colour now - kind of white calico and a bit of ombré still at ends with steel grey underneath and at back).

PookieDo · 14/07/2019 15:47

What do you all do when the grey is wiry? Mine will be so rough and very white

PCohle · 14/07/2019 15:53

Personally I'd save up for a bit and do it with the advice of a decent hairdresser. Going from mid brown to blond over grey hair shouldn't be too hard for a hairdresser to achieve.

Earslaps · 14/07/2019 15:56

I'm currently growing mine out. I've been using henna rather than dye, so the demarcation line isn't as obvious. I decided it would only get harder the greyer I get!

I'm about 2 inches in on a short bob, so probably within the year I'll be my natural colour. I'm surprised that I'm not as grey as I thought! There's loads around the temples and some streaks through the front but it's not as bad as I feared.

I've also found it's not as wiry as I feared, they greys don't poke out. I use silver shampoo to cool down the colour and then straighten, blow dry and smooth coconut oil through my hair and it's in pretty decent condition doing that (despite washing nearly every day due to exercise).

I'm also considering getting some crazy colour manic panic dyes and seeing if the greys pick it up! Pink streaks could be fun!

ladylunchalot · 14/07/2019 16:00

I've been thinking about doing this for ages. I'm 45 and have been dyeing my hair more than half my life. I'm very dark brown but my roots are now white, hairdresser said years ago that it was 80% white even then.

I'm so fed up colouring it every 3 weeks as it grows so fast. The only thing that puts me off is that I have alopecia around my hairline and I'm worried it will look worse if it's white.

Going to have a look at those Facebook groups for inspiration!! My gran was completely white by 40 and looked amazing but my colouring is so different.

Tallgreenbottle · 14/07/2019 16:01

@PookieDo start taking selenium. Your hair should go less coarse.

bridgetreilly · 14/07/2019 16:01

Stop dyeing it, let it all grow out and then decide. Grey hair is very beautiful and dying it darker is so much hassle. If you want it then dyed lighter blonde, go for it.
