To wonder why people hate the self check outs at supermarkets

Mumto123monkeys · 14/07/2019 09:44

It’s driving me a bit mad....people moaning.
I don’t get what’s wrong with them, I’ve heard ‘why would I use them, I don’t work hear’. But surely it shortens the que...

Also ‘I like to speak to people, not a machine’ ok....it’s not difficult to strike up a convo in most places...
and loads of others! Personally, I can’t see the issue! I use both, I prefer self serve-scan as you shop too, if it’s available! It’s much quicker, and the kids love it so helps keep them happy!
I know they can be glitchy, but some shops have got them really good!

I just don’t like being served by a machine. 🤷🏻‍♀️

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 14/07/2019 09:48

They never work properly. There is always an unexpected item in the baggging area and our local supermarket made a lot of staff redundant when they installed them.

I do use them occasionally but generally regret as they start doing daft things.

Loopytiles · 14/07/2019 09:49

They don’t work properly, eg not recognising that an item has gone into a bag. there are never enough staff covering them so it can take ages to check out.

The M&S ones are very loud, talking about the bloody useless Sparks Card.

Sexnotgender · 14/07/2019 09:50

My husband won’t use them as he sees it as taking jobs from people.

Pinktinker · 14/07/2019 09:50

They are glitchy AF and always need an actual human to sort them out, literally 9/10 when I use them. Nothing I’m doing, they just decide not to pick up the weight of something or refuse to scan another thing. Irritating.

Akire · 14/07/2019 09:50

I find them much faster but at least 50% of time they will go wrong for no reason. The weight of something isn’t same as computer weight or you need age ID or it does not like your bag. So the assistant has come over 2-3 times anyway.

ALittleBitAlexis · 14/07/2019 09:51

I will choose self service every time, but I'm glad when people who don't like them don't use them - makes the queue shorter!

Ginmel · 14/07/2019 09:51

Do you go to the bank teller each time you want to get cash out then @herculepoirot2?

CalmFizz · 14/07/2019 09:51

It’s rare to go through them and not require assistance to continue. In busy stores there’s one staff member dashing between about 10 tills to fiddle some buttons.

In the co op you just get ignored by staff while the red light is flashing making it a much longer/tedious process.

I do appreciate them generally, they can be a good way to use up small change and some days you’re not in the mood for people.

C0rnfl0wer · 14/07/2019 09:51

The M&S voice is too perky and loud.

The Sainsbury ones always go wrong and are Uber sensitive.

Rezie · 14/07/2019 09:52

I use them but I dislike them. But I dislike humans more. I always have a backbag cause i cycle to shop and it always goes wrong. So now I just put them to the thing and pack alter which makes it quite slow.

BinkyBaa · 14/07/2019 09:52

I like them, but tbh I reckon I'm a bit younger than the majority using them.

Could be a generational divide? Us antisocial techie younguns preferring to talk to a machine.

Mintjulia · 14/07/2019 09:53

Simple. They never work properly. I don’t have time to faff around waiting for someone to come and fix the thing.
If someone wants my custom the’ll Have the decency to provide a cashier.

LittleCandle · 14/07/2019 09:53

They take jobs away from actual people and as has been said above, they never work properly. If you have a bag that already has items in it, the machine refuses to weigh that bag, and you need a person. You buy something that might require an age ID, you need a person. The barcode isn't recognised - you need a person. So stop wasting time and just use people, ffs. I work in retail and do you know - I don't want to continue to do something that seems like work when I am doing the fucking shopping!

SimonJT · 14/07/2019 09:53

They never work!

I was at Sainsburys self check out last week, I popped my bag on the scale bit to be weighed, I then had to wait for a human being to authorise my carrier bag. Every single time I scanned and item and put it in the bag I had to wait for a human being to put the authorisation code in showing the item was in the bag.

BinkyBaa · 14/07/2019 09:54

That said, I have an easier time buying alcohol at a regular till, they always seem a bit suspicious that I'm trying to sneak through at the self scan (I'm 23).

Furrydogmum · 14/07/2019 09:54

When something goes wrong, at 10 tills at once, there is only 1 member of staff to sort the issue!

Asdf12345 · 14/07/2019 09:54

They work well where we are and tend to be much faster.

I feel a little guilty putting people out of work by using them but I do fancy cheaper shopping, and reducing staffing costs across the market will allow competition to drive prices further down.

herculepoirot2 · 14/07/2019 09:54

Ginmel

No.

Mumto123monkeys · 14/07/2019 09:54

@ALittleBitAlexis haa yes! Very true!

I find some shops are better than others, Morrison’s always go wrong, I find waitroses’ the easiest and least glitchy!

I absolutely love them!

Has anyone used them at Decathlon? There's a bucket underneath a screen and you just place the items one at a time into the bucket and it magically knows they are there. No swiping tags or typing things in. I was in absolute awe! Grin

Apparently they (not decathlon but techy people generally) are working on magic trolleys that do the same, you just put the items in there's no need to check out because it knows what's in there.

BigRedLondonBus · 14/07/2019 09:55

I prefer them! I wish they had them as an option everywhere as I hate going to check outs and avoid them at all costs, I hate small talk when being served by someone and also sometimes I’m on the phone whilst out and like that I can use a self checkout with out having to come off the phone.

NoHummus · 14/07/2019 09:55

I always use them. I can't remember the last time I went to a staffed checkout in a supermarket.

MitziK · 14/07/2019 09:56

How many people - mostly women - no longer have a job now they put in a bank of machines and one person to sort out problems?

They knew this would disproportionately cost female jobs. They still did it.

maddiemookins16mum · 14/07/2019 09:56

“UNEXPECTED ITEM IN THE BAGGING AREA”.
Enough said.
Oh and forgetting that because I’ve picked up a packet of Ibuprofen I have to wait for someone.
