About anaphylactic shock risk?

School trip next week, via the Eurotunnel. One student is severely allergic to sesame, amongst other things. We have his epi-pen spare, he has his. We are trained on how to deal. Other students have been strongly reminded not to bring anything he’s allergic to on the coach. I’ll remind again before they get on.

There is a Burger King at the Eurotunnel. Their buns are covered in sesame seeds. We have at least an hour there. AIBU to ban them from buying anything there? (They’ve been told to bring food for the journey.) They are good students and I can post a teacher just in case. Am I being overly cautious? Even washing hands, I can’t be sure there aren’t traces and there’s air con circulating on the coach.

I presume Serena means that you and the children will be returning from the school trip and can continue with their lives, which may or may not include eating at Burger King.

I imagine Cherry missed the "in life" bit Smile

Exactly that. Of course it's not the only chance in their lives to have BK!

II imagine Cherry missed the "in life" bit

Oops, just realised that's probably what happened

@Cherrysoup as a mother of a DD who is anaphylactic to tree nuts I really applaud you for thinking ahead & putting measures in place to protect this person. I'm literally terrified every time my DD leaves the house as the dangers are everywhere, as a parent it's just absolutely horrible & I'm sure everyone I know is sick of me reminding them she can't be around nuts!
Well done for what your doing, I'd be delighted if my daughter was in your care

I did indeed!

Of course, they won’t die from missing out during this trip! 😀

I actually said I agreed that you should have someone on BK to stop them Grin

If he takes anti-histamines, he needs to use as little water as possible in case a contaminant is on his tongue.

I hadn't heard of this. My son was diagnosed with a peanut allergy in his early 20s and he's never mentioned it. It does make sense. Is there a recommendation of what they should do (as well as taking anti-histamines and using an epi-pen?)

Unless you physically check and search everyone’s bag for sesame several times a day, you and he have to behave as if the allergen is on the trip. Is the allergy airborne/transmitted by touch? Very different to if he only has the reaction when actually ingesting sesame. The most important thing is that he is very clued up about checking what he is eating and washing hands etc if he has a concern that contact with sesame is an issue. Sharing food is likely to be high risk.
