To give up trying to find a decent foundation

I bought a new foundation stick today and have turned myself orange. DD’s think this is hilarious Angry

They are impossible to bloody match to your actual skin, even if you get the No7 matching done this doesn’t help you find a shade in a different brand. I’ve been to make up counters before and they never seem to get a good match either. I’ve done Findation online for colours that match but in L’Oréal foundations I don’t like the formula and it gives you a list of colours so at least I have that now

I need full coverage as I have a lot of melasma (butterfly shape across eyes and forehead also upper lip) but I find that liquid foundation slides off, goes weird and patchy. So I tried a fixing spray but this just makes it worse.

Cream foundation kind of seems to stick to my melasma patches strangely but does seem better coverage. I used to buy powder foundation but couldn’t find much of any today in any shops, is this no longer a thing?

My skin is kind of dry, do I need a primer? What one?! They feel greasy

What am I doing wrong? I have heard good things about MAC studio fix and Estée Lauder double wear but I don’t know if these are worth trying at £30 a go

Or give up and just go to work make up free (I do not want to do this, I want to wear make up!

I also have yellow undertones and prefer a foundation that is in a powder compact so you can put it on with the sponge applicator wherever you are, no mess. Is that what you meant by powder foundation?

I use Guerlain Lingerie de Peau - you can get refills so you don’t have to keep buying the whole compact. I love it and it is suited for yellow tones.

catmg · 13/07/2019 22:18

Another vote for Estée Lauder - I have used double wear light in the past and that is long lasting enough for me.
MAC studio fix is also good.

Also recommend application with a brush - seems like a bit of a waste as you use more but it does go on better.

Estee Lauder Doublewear Maximum Cover Camouflage Makeup is the one you need OP, it covers my rosacea and melasma brilliantly. Get a colour match at an EL counter. Apply quite sparingly with a decent foundation brush. A tube lasts me 3-4 months.

ThisIsNotAIBUPeople · 13/07/2019 22:21

The larger Boots stores usually have EL

Underworld345 · 13/07/2019 22:26

Double wear for me too but I never liked the matched colours they did for me at the counters. Took some trial and error but now I have the perfect colour.

It is expensive but you don’t need much, I use it most days and lasts around 4-6 months.

Bluntness100 · 13/07/2019 22:33

I don't know if you wish to stretch to it, but if you're looking for a powder foundation Chanel does a great one. You'd need to find a department store though to try it.

MatchSetPoint · 13/07/2019 22:37

I agree with a Bare-minerals powder foundation, Estée Lauder is tested on animals who wants a foundation that’s been squished into a rabbits eye!

brimfullofasha · 13/07/2019 22:38

I have dry, yellow-toned skin and melasma. I used to use EL Double-wear but found it dried my skin. I now use No.7 hydroluminous foundation which is medium coverage and put concealer on my dark patches. Seems to work better as I don't need full coverage everywhere.

Snoopdogsbitch · 13/07/2019 22:41

OP there's one being advertised on Facebook where the woman draws black marker on her face and it"s covered perfectly by the foundation. I don't know what it's called but looks great.

mildshock · 13/07/2019 22:41

For your melasma, use an orangey/peach colour corrector on the affected areas under your foundation.

It will even out your skin tone much better than using a foundation alone.

MitziK · 13/07/2019 22:45

I use cold cream or emollient cream (essentially the same stuff, it's whatever's in either bathroom - their main ingredient is liquid paraffin) for dry skin - rub it into dry skin, rub off with a flannel rinsed in hot water.

Within a couple of days, I found that my cheap as anything pale CC cream (possibly Maybelline? Whatever is cheapest at Ocado) looks absolutely perfect - I use a brush rather than a damp blender and some pink toned concealer. I've also got a rimmel lasting wear and a max factor panstick (not sure if they even do that anymore, but it's lasted forever in the fridge) and they look so much better since starting.

I concentrate upon the T zone, where there is the most discolouration (redness, dark circles, etc) and it's unnoticeable at the same time as building up enough to cover the bits I need (I've got freckles as well, and don't want to whitewash them out).

But pale, pink toned skin is/was harder to find matching shades for - Rimmel were really the only brand that offered pale and pink toned for many years - American and continental brands tended to be more yellow toned.

Cherrysoup · 13/07/2019 22:47

Bare minerals, amazing! I’ve got the cream foundation that covers even tattoos. It stays on all day, no flaking/caking, it’s £16, bought through Facebook. I’ll find it in a minute, you just need to get the right shade, mines a bit pale, my kids thought I was ill!

CandiedSkulls · 13/07/2019 22:48

I always prime. Nyx do a nice one for dry skin (I can't remember the name, but it's a blue tube!). Make sure to match the primer to the foundation - silicone primer needs a silicone foundation, same with water-based.

What are you setting your foundation with?

My safe bets for foundation are always Armani luminous silk and Chanel vitalumiere. Illamasqua are great but the shade range is not it. Double Wear is fantastic if you don't mind a slightly heavier feel. Do you apply with a sponge or a brush? I find that sponges are better for dry skin, but that's possibly just personal preference.

Lily Lolo do a nice powder foundation and I've heard good things about the Gosh one in Superdrug.

PawPawNoodle · 13/07/2019 22:48

My friend has melasma and uses the Vichy concealer over it, and then just uses a normal foundation. I'd recommend going to a few counters in Boots and trying their ranges, most higher end brands will give you a sample.

Eloisedublin123 · 13/07/2019 22:48

For anyone with roseacre try everything in the kalme range. And esp the concealer. Goes on green but is amazing

MitziK · 13/07/2019 22:49

Just checked my purchase history - it's the Maybelline Matt CC - even though it's advertised for oily skin, with the cold cream as cleanser and moisturiser, it goes on perfectly.

PookieDo · 13/07/2019 22:51

So what I am finding is that I can cover it, under my eyes and on cheekbones but closer up you can see it’s not settled properly, so it’s kind of separating. The only way to cover this up is powder so I end up having to put on a lot of highlight/bronze/blush because no matter what applicator I use, no foundation or concealer will sit properly on the drier patches. I’ve tried primer and I’ve tried setting spray but this leads me to conclude I probably should just stick with powder everything! Liquid may not be my friend

The nearest bare minerals counter is about 30 miles away goddam Angry and I’ve tried colour matching on the website but it’s not really making me feel confident, can’t remember but I think mine was just ‘beige’ before 🤷🏻‍♀️ And you also need the proper brush

I do have a small ish boots with a no7 counter to get matched so maybe I could try their mineral powder has anyone tried it? Then I could try get a shade nearer in BM. Similar prices

Does smashbox primer work with mineral foundation?

I am an absolute cheapskate in most things in life and I change up every part of my makeup and skincare regime to find the best for the lowest price (Primark mascara is great).

But I absolutely will not compromise on using Estee lauder double wear. Never found anything else that comes close to the coverage and durability while looking natural.

Waveysnail · 13/07/2019 23:06

Ask for samples from high end counters then you dont have to spend a fortune.

akmum18 · 13/07/2019 23:07

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but TML colour change foundation is amazing you can buy it on eBay cheaper than the main site - it basically adapts to your skin colour so no more orange Smile

akmum18 · 13/07/2019 23:07

*TLM

PookieDo · 13/07/2019 23:08

I’m cracking I am going to drive to a department store and I won’t leave without some make up 😂

I can't praise Estée Lauder doublewear enough. Yes it is bloody expensive but the make up counters will always give you a free sample which lasts a couple of weeks I find. They never ask questions just fill a little pot. I do that to tide me over until there is s good offer on or I can get duty free.

Waveysnail · 13/07/2019 23:09

I used to swear by demablend when my acne was severe
